302 Or 351???

Hi guys, my experience is basically on 300CID engines, recently a friend ask me>

How can I identify a 302 side to a 351???

Can someone helpme on this??? as far as I know, both look very similar, isn't it?

measure from the base of the valve cover across the intake to the base of the opposite valve cover. If its a 351w it will be 11" a 302 is around 9".

Another way, feel the block behind the intake, a 351w has two very noticable ridges, a 302 has none.

also the intake runners on the upper intake of the 351 is round looking . while the 302 upper intake runners are square

Look at the front of the engine where the heads meet the block. The water pump inlets on the 302 will be right at the head gasket. Look at a 351, there will be about an inch and a quarter space between the inlets and the bottom of the head. (said a different way) The deck height on a 351 is taller than the 302 and the water inlets are at the same level.
