I am about to give it a transmission fluid and filter change. This will be the first time that I have done so.
My transmission pan has a 20 bolt pattern.
Could anyone give me advice on how to proceed to get the maximum benefit from this change. Such as, is it really necessary to drain the fluid from the torque converter also. And if so, what steps are needed and in what order.
I have never in my life touched a torque converter.
I had read that article about 2 hours or so before I joined this forum and posted. And to be honest, it was that article that got me perplexed. In fact, I bookmarked it as to reread it again. After I had posted here in the forum I read the article again. It gave me a whole new insight into the changing of transmission filters and fluids. Because of that article, I spent quite a bit of time last night trying to figure out an easier method, or at least, trying to find an article to persuade me not to go near the torque converter.
I have always, with any of the vehicles that I have owned, and just recently with my Sidekick, have merely dropped the pan and installed a filter and new fluid. I have never given any thought to the torque converter.
And now, my first post on this forum was answered by the man whose article inspired me to write it. It must be a sign.
Thanks Mark. I shall reread until I feel confident enough to do it. I shall let you know.
The best fluid (in my opinion) is Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. If that's too pricey Valvoline Maxlife is a good fluid. I've had good results with both of these.
Consider installing a pan drain plug---available from NAPA et al for about $7 and makes next change so much easier. Better to drop an almost empty pan instead of one full of fluid.
I'll second changing the TC fluid too--as Mark says it contains at least half the total fluid in the entire transmission. I believe the TC drain plug is not reusable so maybe have one on hand when doing the service. (This might not apply to your '90---it is mentioned specifically for my '00 4R70W).
It's not up to me to decide if it is worth it. I think the fluid exchange machines are the best way to change all of the fluid. They will change about 95% of the total fluid. The only way to change more than that is to remove the transmission and totally tear it down.
