Torque converter drain
Today I pulled the tranny pan and filter.
No shavings, but fluid was very dirty.
Should I go the extra step to drain the torque converter to get anouther 4 qts out of the system
Or
Would I just wait a month the change atf again.
Tks

I should add the pan is already back in place, but torque converter can be reached w/o dropping pan again

seems like getting the most dirty fluid out would make the most sense. drain the converter.

I can't come up with a single reason why you would want to mix the new fluid with that old, dirty fluid in the torque converter. Drain it.

Thanks all.
Just to confirm the steps
-pull flywheel housing cover
- rotate flywheel using wrench on fan pully
-align converter drain plug and remove plug.
- reinstall plug
-clean up inside of flywheel housing
- reinstall cover
-add 4 quarts dextron atf to pan
-Run engine
-Add anouther 4 quarters
-Run engine
-Top off atf
I read something about adjusting an intermediate band but don't know what that is

Re
I have no idea if dipstick is original, but it say cj so I am going to flip a coin and go w dex merc.
Trany should be early 70's c6 if original but maybe po swapped out for newer 78 or 79 when they put in the 429

After an hour using a mirror to look through each hole I have concluded there is no plug to drain converter.
Now I need to decide if I will try my own flush or take it in for a flush.

No, the drain plug is in the converter itself, not in the bell housing.
It's positioned on the front of the converter, facing forward towards the engine. There are usually four holes in the flexplate that give access to the drain plug, regardless of the position that the converter & flexplate were bolted together in.
Here is a link showing the drain plug (pic at bottom of the page)............

When I look through all the access hole every one is open all the way to back of bell housing. My access holes are to left of bolts not to the right as shown in pic
Something else I noticed in the pic was the 2 brackets just on side of oil pan.
I do not have these. Where do these connect on engine side

At a radius that is same as flywheel bolts my Torgue converter does not have any material other then where the flywheel bolts attach. Given no material at any access holes there can be no plug at access holes.
In all flywheel holes without bolts, I can see all the way back to the bell housing wall & plugs.
Maybe the torque converter plug is not located along same radius as the flywheel bolts or maybe the plug is just facing down and not torwards the engine. Final option is no plug at all and PO coupled a different C6 to the 429.
