Service Engine Soon Light / Others
Alright, my truck is giving me fits. I don't have an AE and don't have anyone close that I know of at this time who has one. I have a ScanGauge, which shows no codes and no pending codes either. When I start the truck "cold", (first start even on a 90 degree day) the truck will miss on one or two cylinders until it reaches full operating temp. As long as it doesn't sit more than three hours or so after that, it will never miss on startup again until the following day. I had oil on the ground about two weeks ago (had been doing this bad idle for weeks before that) and the HPOP had a leak. I used Guzzle's kit and replaced all o-rings on the HPOP and the fuel bowl. No more leaks, idle issue still there. It lacks power and smokes black when you accelerate (and shakes like thunder) and as soon as it reaches max temp, step on the gas, it smooths out, stops the smoke and runs like a top. I forgot to say, my service engine soon light ONLY comes on during accel. and goes out at cruise speed or decel. This is driving me nuts, I don't want to throw $1,200 and a days worth of work into an HPOP replacement, and turn out to be $1,200 worth of injectors and another days' worth of work on it. Wish I knew which it was. Any help would be appreciated. The warming up and problem going away sounds like a sticky injector, but I thought HPOP as well.. but seems to me it wouldn't miss on a single cylinder, it would just be weak across all 8.

I asked about location so that maybe someone from your area (I know we have a member in Herndon, KY) would see your location and make an offer. Anyway, it seems that the most practical way of solving your cold start problem is to hook an AE scanner in log mode and start it cold. I think a few folks will make educated guesses, but as you said "I wish I knew what is was" and the easiest way would be to hook an AE to it. That black smoke on acceleration sounds like boost leaks in the turbocharger system.

Does it run better if you plug the engine in for a few hours first?
I'd pull the valve covers and start the engine up when it's cold and should give you fits. Then watch the oil discharge from each injector. See if you don't have a few injectors not spitting oil when cold, but start to after the engine warms up.

There's an oil discharge spout at the 11 o clock position of each injector. Each time the injector fires, it will discharge oil out of that spout, so oil discharge from there is good. If there is no oil coming out of that spout with the engine running, that injector is not firing.
If you see oil bubbling up from where the injector seats down in the head, then you need new o-rings and that's bad.

Chris, plugging the truck in will speed up the time it takes for the problem to go away, but it will still have the problem at startup. I can either A: crank it, build oil pressure and set my high idle for ten minutes and when I come back the problem is gone, or I take right off, drive until the temp. reaches normal, kick it into passing gear and problem is solved. I truly believe it to be an injector issue, will try your idea this week sometime and hope for something obvious.
