Installing heads/turn engine over?

I am getting my ducks in a row to install my heads first part of next week. I have read many times about turning the engine over before torquing the heads down. From what I can gather its about the lifters either not bleeding down or bleeding down to far. Cheezit has posted about this several times just want to make sure I do it right. Would appreciate any info on this. Thanks.

I don't know about the clearance issues on our trucks but on other diesels/cars it's wise to clay the top of the piston and then torque down the heads and give her a spin or three and then pull the heads and make sure the valves clear the pistons plus a little for float.

The 6.0 is not an Interferiance engine

But does need to be spun and checked for binding and valve train operation

I would definatly do it if it was me

It most certainly is an interference engine.

Are the rockers in place when you bolt the heads down? seems like snugging up the rockers would be the issue for interference.

I think I've read that the mark on the crank pulley should be at the 6 o'clock position when tightening the rockers. Don't know why, but maybe that ensures none of the pushrods are at their highest point.

Here's thread where 2006powerstroke90 did his heads back in Feb.

cartmanea is correct. If the crank dowl is at 6 oclock none of the pistons are at top dead center. also roll it over by hand to check for binding before final touque.

Timing..when I pull the heads off, will I also be taking a timing chain off, then I will have to reset the timing?

when you reinstall the heads the crank dowel should be at 6'oclock. basicly make sure no piston is at top dead. also the heads are not so light using a cherry picker and a chain is better then tring to lift them oput by hand.

This is what cheezit said in another thread and I have been researching this and other forums and this is the general consensis. If you do not do this, the way I understand it you can bend #5 or #8 pushrods due to lifters staying pumped up. If I am wrong please correct me before next Tuesday when I hope to land the passanger side head. Thanks.

assembel the engine with all pistons down were the dowl is really doesnt matter if the pistons are down... but to make it easy for any one not sure follow the sound advise on dowl placment.
torqure heads to first step (65ft lb ?) spin engine over by hand and make sure it turns over and all rockers move. I would suggect you do this one head at a time. this way if you have an issue you will know what head to pull back off.
#5 is the favorite to bend push tubes, however any of them may do it.
