is it worth it to get any work done to d3ve heads. what type of compression are you looking at ? if they aren't worth working with then what would be good heads that are not aluminum?
While the D3 heads are not the worst(that eh, honor, goes to D2VE's), they certainly are lackluster when compared to C8-D1 heads, and far inferior to D0OE(CJ) and D2AE(PI) heads. If you are on a really tight budget, have the D3's worked over, but if not, locate a set of C8, C9, D0, or D1VE heads, and start from there.
D3s can certainly be made to be a good flowing head with the normal portwork, provided you want to keep you engine on the lower compression side of things. I know many boat guys like them. The D3s on the later engines with stock pistons made somewhere around 8.0
D3's can be made to perform and you can get pistons to make the CR respectable. Overall they are not as good as the older heads and can never flow as much, but with a good port job and pistons to give the right CR, they can be massaged to put out over 600 hp. Not bad for stock iron!!!
C8's are essentially the same as the C9's and D0VE's. They are all good heads that can be made to flow really well. They have smaller combustion chambers and will bump your CR about 1-1.5 points.
