Light Frame Rust

My 04 EX is showing some frame rust after being in Colorado for almost 4 years. I brought it with me to Colorado when I relocated from Southern California, so I could be close to family.

I did a search on the subject, coming up with the idea of spraying with used engine oil out of diesel. I have also seem a couple of different paint methods to deal with the rust. I stopped by my local body shop, the only solution there was separating body and frame to strip and repaint. The quote was rough for $4k could be more or less.

I could use some advise, cause right now its looking like time to sell before it becomes a real issue.

When you say light frame rust, can you describe it more? Seems a little drastic to sell, most vehicles around here have way more than a light frame rust and they don't have any issues. Unless the issue you are refering to is how ugly rust looks, that is very true.

$4K? Nah, just do the oil spray once or twice a year and pocket the difference. You'll have the nicest frame So Cal and a typical, stained driveway - with matching earthquake cracks. Or park in the street to make that city asphalt last longer.

Rust

I brought the truck here from CA, what a mistake. The oil trick won't do well here. My place is 4 yrs old and not a spot on the driveway. Anyone tried the Chassis Saver product?

I say wire brush off the worst rust, paint brush on some of that rust converter, then paint/undercoat it the color of your choice. I'll be good as new. And pocket the $3969. If you want to get ****, mask off the brake/fuel/AC/etc lines before coating. Untreated, your truck will take 20+yrs in the salt belt to rust through a cross member.

I lay down a plastic tarp when I spray my frames and then let the vehicle sit for a couple days to drip off. After that one camping trip at highway speeds blows off any extra and it is all good after that.

Before spraying I used to brush the oil on.

What he said ^^, either find a place that specializes in rust proofing/treating cars or forget about it and enjoy the Ex.

I use a cheap $20 body paint sprayer from fleet farm. It has a very big nozzle on it, I think stock, and flows well.

Just strait. I do all the oil changes on all the diesels and vehicles around here so I always save the best (blackest oldest) stuff I can get.

I painted my Excursion with chassis saver. Here is a thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...l#post10129702. Update - it is still holding up well. This fall I plan on powerwashing and touching up or maybe another full coat for the heck of it. It takes a while but worth it. Depends on how much effort you are willing to put into it
