How do you handle rusted Frame??

Hello Folks,

I have a 1978 F250 4X4...It has been ib the family a lomg time and will be a lot more if I can help it. The frame is really bubbling with rust underneath...when you dig into the paint you at times get 1/8 " rust with it. The frame is still ok but I need to know how to treat it. Correct me if I am wrong, but my plan is to scrape the rust etc off and dig down to good metal--after that I plan to oil coat the the frame at a local rust doctor kind of place...How does this sound to you guys??

Appreciate your help.

scott

After getting the loose rust off, personally I would use Zero Rust. Besides being available in a rattle can, it stops the rust dead, and it has what I consider the perfect semi-gloss for a frame.

I did alot of research and talked to a lot of people who restore vehicles and I found that most prefer to use POR 15 for killing present and future rust.
I just finished doing the frame on my 78 F-250 4x4 and I like the way it turned out.

I did my frame with POR-15 a couple of years ago but have since started using Zero-Rust based on what I have read here and elsewhere. It’s about have the price and a lot healthier to work with. Both do a good job and look identical when finished.

No need to oil coat. ZR & POR are both paints that dry to a nice gloss finish.

I think you can get them in a flat finish also, but not sure. I like the gloss on the frame.

Well, you can buy it from Eastwood. Another options is to stop in at the ZR web site and ask them. They should be able to direct you to a local seller.

Don't know. I do know ZR performs better than POR15.

Just a thought here-

My neighbor is a bowtie kinda-guy, but other than that he's ok. He recently rebuilt his ride (frame-off resto), and he had the entire frame Rhyno coated. Tough as hell and warranteed forever. Looks pretty cool, and his truck will probably be around a long, long time.

i was thinking about cleaning my frame up and makin it purty underneath. if i was going to use zero rust, how would i prep the surface? just scrape the surface rust off with a wire brush or get a wire wheel and take it down until its shiny?
