My grandfathers truck is great and i thought i was in really good shape with the truck even after knowing the engine was blew untill i got under it today and i got a really good look. now i see the frame is really rusty. i cant tell if its surface rust or if its the kind of rust that will make me need a new frame or junk it. i really would hate to have to get rid of my grandfathers memory. so my question is even if the truck is frame is rusty can it still be road worthy or do i need to look for another frame my wife is dead against me gettin rid of the truck so any help yall can give me would be great. i am hoping i just have the frame sandblasted and painted with por15 to get rid of all the rust and to make it worry free.
The poster claims that truck is rusty, yea right. Wish my frame was that clean.
Most every truck I've ever owned with the exception of two had or have rusty frames, living in MI. some rust comes with the territory. Not a big deal as long as its just surface rust, even a few flakes won't weaken the frame enough to worry about. Now if you find a spot that looks like swiss cheese you may want to do something about it.
Yea bad enough that one broke but now he's looking for another "Chevy", just goes to show ya some people do not learn from their mistakes!
I had a Chevy pickup once..........I cut the frame under the cab, bent it in and added a tongue and made a trailer out of it there by keeping the best part. Scraping the front half with the motor, tranny, cab with everything else still attached!
take a wire brush too the frame then you'll see the damage, honestly those frames are like construction beams you'd really have a hard time rusting through them but if your worried take a wirebrush before you spend money sandblasting it, and buy the norust junk at the home depot to treat the surface after you brush away the rust, this will give you an idea of the condition before you spend big money sandblasting it
