Sorry to hear you've been misled HogTied.

They looked like the same manufacture in the pictures online.

Try it.
I hope it works as well for you as it did for me!

Well... I'm back.

90 days, the starter has a dead short and it sounds like something is loose inside.

IDK, it has been really good so far.
I'll let you all know how the "1 year, no hassle" warranty works out.

Thats Tough! I hope they sort it for you. I was asking questions about starters for my 400 for the same reason.

DB has been nothing but helpful.
They seem like they really care about the customer.
According to the online tracking my replacement should be here tomorrow.

How are things working out with your DB starter now? I'm needing one for my 460/390 flywheel/np435 setup.

i've just run into issues with it.

BUT! I don't think the starter is at fault.
I have had "issues" with a half a dozen different starters since I swapped flywheels for my 5 speed conversion.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is something wrong with my flywheel, and not the starter.

What I cannot figure out is why is there only 1 starter for the old-style direct drive, but there are manual and auto trans versions of the gear reduction starter?

I wanted to try the DB but from what I read online, they don't seem to be any more reliable than the ones from Advance. So I got the Advance direct-drive unit, it was only $50, at least if it craps out I can just go down the street and get another one the same day.

It's been in the truck about a month and it still suprises me how fast it spins the motor over compared to my old one.

I think there is a depth or diameter difference in the ring gear.
But I do know that I would snap the whole snout off my old style DD rocker style starters.
This has been a thorn in my side for over a year and I am going to get to the bottom of it.

Epic measuring and over analyzing going on in the 'what did you do to your truck today' thread.

I'm new to the 385 engine family and 1 thing is cristal clear already. There are more issues with 385 starters than anything I've seen before. What is the deal??? Makes me wonder if I should go back and build a stroker FE...

Update:
It's that the ring gear is too small.

The starter is just fine.
