Db starter question

DB Electrical - Ford 7.3 Diesel Starter Powerstroke Truck HT 1994-2003 SND0355 17802

This unit says it replaces the original 3 mounting hole unit but my starter only has two mounting holes. Is this still the one I need? I have an '01 sd 7.3. Thanks guys.

You do want the starter with 3 mounting holes. But you do not want to get a starter from them. Trust all of us when we say to go elsewhere. You're better off with a parts store reman with lifetime warranty, at least when theirs goes out you get another one. Or call Riffraff Diesel and see if he can get you a nice one.

Thanks for the tip. I've read mixed reviews. I'm on about my fifth autozone starter. Sure, lifetime warranty is nice but my time is worth something. So is there a general concensus on a good starter to go with that's cheaper than oem?

What Im saying is the db starter is no better than one from autozone and you'll be in the same boat except with no warranty. Mike just had an alternator rebuilt locally so if you have a good shop that you trust to rebuild the starter that's a good option. Another option is to riffraff. There's a ton of other options if you do a search.

All of the parts stores show a 2 or a 3 hole for the 7.3. Mine has a 2 hole on it now but the 3 hole at the parts stores look like the one from db except it's not a gear reduction type. Will this 3 hole work on mine?

DB used to be great, but they started having a lot of issues with imported Chinese junk that they seem to be selling now.

Why don't you find a local guy that rebuilds starters and alternators and just have the one you've got now fixed up right? Otherwise I believe one of the other favorites is the Mitsubishi Denso starter, but I can't tell you where to get it.

Are you sure about that? Im not questioning your knowledge I just want to be sure because they look a little different on the part that goes into the flywheel and it's not a gear reduction type. I can't take it to someone to rebuild it here because I need it soon and I work during the times that any rebuild shop would be open. 100% Brand New Starter for 1995-2000 Ford Econoline E350 1 Ton 7.3 Diesel 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3L Diesel 1994-1996 Ford F250 3/4 Ton Diesel 1999-2001 Ford F250 Super Duty 7.3L Diesel 1994-1997 Ford F350 1 Ton 7.3L Diesel 1999-2001 Ford F350 Super Du this looks like the one that the parts stores have. You are saying this will work on my 2 hole mount? If this 3 hole unit will work would it be better than the 2 hole unit? It looks heavier duty than the 2 hole.

Yes it will work! If its for a 7.3 powerstroke it will work. The db starter is only like $97 for the denso look alike. I'm using one now and am liking it way more than my old napa starter! I went through about 4 of them in less than 6 months. This db is doing good especially as much as I've Bren jacking with my truck, it takes a beating. but I cant say how long it will last. I'll just have to see. I wonder if u can get it rebuilt by my local starter shop?

Oh yes it is a "gear-reduction" type! Why do you think not?

Google "PLGR starter" and see why it is.

Many engines use this kind of design.

I guess i just assumed it wasn't gear reduction type because it is an inline type and not offset like the 2 hole and the one on db. So has anybody had better experience with the 3 hole type?

Yes the 3 hole is a better starter and in a smaller case. Like many of us i have used both. Ill say it one last time, Riffraff can get you a mitsubisbi starter at a good price.

You gotta do what makes you feel comfortable. But I'm at a point with starters and alternators that it feels like a crap shoot. I realize the parts store stuff is crap but they are both so easy to change out and easily available no matter where you are that its the best choice for me to buy them and just warranty them out.
