Intended on replacing Crank Sensor, P2617, not so sure this is it, but I'm running out of ideas.

So far, I've found remove battery cable support, remove negative cable from block.

I can kinda get my hand on the connector for the CKP but I can't get it off. I was pressing the tab in but no luck in getting it off yet.

Started to unbolt the CKP from the block and the skies opened up. Pouring rain.

At least it gave me some time to think. I think a thin standard screwdriver to help the clip off as I depress the clip. Think I'll leave the CKP bolted on for some leverage.

Somedays, ya know...

Are you wanting to replace the Camshaft Sensor (CMP or CPS as it was called w/ the 7.3L) or Crankshaft Sensor (CKP)? I assume it is the CKP.

Located underneath the A/C compressor, the CKP is very hard to get to (could take hours). You need long, skinny arms for the job. Always disconnect the batteries before beginning this job. FYI - it is easier to unplug the sensor with it in the hole. I have not done it personally, but I have read that a 16" ratchet extension and a pivoting adapter, and an 8 mm socket will get you to the bolt holding the sensor in.

The sensor itself rarely fails. The connector itself seems to fail more than the sensor.

I hope it's the sensor, I have no idea how I'd replace to the connector. It's really tight in there.

Replaced Crank Position Sensor. Still no start.

Ideas?

BTW. What a PITA it is to change the crank position sensor.

Gotta head to work, I'll read codes later tonight.

Think I'm going to swap out FICM with my brother's 2003 X. To rule out bad FICM, that's still the only code I have P0611.

OK Here's what I know.

I have RPM while cranking (good cam sensor)
I have fuel pressure (ICP 1300 psi Next to confirm fuel pressure at pump next)
FICM no sync.

Going to try and swap out a known good FICM.

Sure seems like a FICM failure. Sudden, no start.

Couldn't get my hands on a good ficm.

Been talking to Dave at Swamps. I'm sending my FICM and ECM to him for testing at his suggestion. Can't ask for more than that.

Something's up, no FICM sync, so I guess either the FICM or the ECM crapped out.

I'll let you all know.

UPDATE on NO START

Just spoke to Patrick at Swamp's Diesel.

My PCM is dead.

They're going to open it up and see if there's a component failure and if there is attempt a reapir. Or look for corrupt software and attempt reprogram.

OR....

New PCM is $1,080 from ford. OR find used, needs to be engine specific (6.0l) and year specific (2005).

Anybody got one?

Bigger concern? FICM in April 2011, PCM July 2011. Batteries are good. FML....

No the FICM is good. I replaced it in April of 2011.

The PCM is no good. It's original to the truck.

I have nothing but good things to say about Swamps.

My comment meant, the FICM died in April, the PCM dies in July. Do I have some type of electrical issue going on here? Alternator issue? IDK.

Hopefully Swamps can fix yours. If not, you might try www.partsguyed.com and see what his price is.

Or there are a handful of used ones on E-Bay. If you go the E-Bay route, I'd ship it to Swamps, have them test it and check it out good and put the right flash on to match your FICM.

Found a couple of options.

A. Swamps trying to fix mine.
B. www.ecmdepot.com $365 plus $75 core
C. My brother's stepson works at a dealership list is like $1,036 his price $416.

Programming....

A. Swamps fixes mine and retains programming
B & C. Ship to swamps to marry with FICM programming.

Any guesses on why I lost a FICM and PCM in a 3 month span? Age? Electrical issue? Bad karma? I knew I should have called that girl from the bar in Detroit back....

I'd pay the extra money for the one from the dealer, personally. It's not that much more, the dealer is more of a known entity (re-manufactured by Motorcraft, probably), and will probably have a better warranty.

As to why it went out, I dunno. PCM's are usually pretty hardy. I'd say odds are just coincidence, but you might try to find a professional alternator shop and have them test the diodes and such in the alternator. Make sure you're getting the cleanest juice you can get.

That was my thought at well. That and there's 77K on the original alternator, so maybe just replace it.

I'm not one to throw parts at things, but, I'm starting to think more like an aviation mechanic. X number of hours, and it needs to be replaced. Not if it's gonna fail more like when.

Guess I'll go price alternators. I was ready to spend a $1,000 on a new PCM, looks like $400 ish. Yeah, I know, I'm justifying...

Update:

Spoke to my local Ford Dealer (Bergey's Ford Springhouse PA). Quoted me $679 for a new PCM plus programming. Explained my brother's stepson works at a Ford Dealership in FL and could get the part for $416. After being persistent, "Hey I did buy 3 X's from your dealership for like $150K, I can't get employee pricing?" Came back at $465, five days to get it.

I'll ship it to Swamps for them to marry to the FICM. Seems like forever I don't have a truck to drive.

Not sure if I mentioned this, but, Swamps tested my FICM and PCM, on a bench and a vehicle for no charge. Stand up guys.
