For reading other posts I understand there may be a problem later on with the transmission if the vehicle is equipped with 5.4L with 3.73 gears. I have a 2003 F-150 SC 4x4. I pull my track car on an open trailer. The entire load is about 6,000lbs. The truck pulls fine and the transmission does not disengage the torque converter until I press on the gas a little too much. The only way I know how to disengage the converter is take it out of overdrive but that is excessive because that takes the rpm's up 1,000 more which hurts fuel economy. The torque converter adjusts the rpm by 200-300. I know these numbers are not exactly accurate but you get my point. I would like to hook a switch up to turn off engaging the torque converter. Is this possible?
The TC seems to engage and disengage a lot while pulling a load. It thought if I lessen that, I would not have to have the transmission rebuilt in 30,000 miles.
I tow about 10-12000# with my 7700 daily..I know what you are talking about..I am planning on putting in 4;30 gears in mine due to the fact I am overloading it for sure. But I think you should talk to the people at bauman Engineering, they know theses trannies well.let us know what works out..There are many owners with your same outlook on this..
If you tow without the torque converter locked you will probably toast it on a long trip because the fluid will get extremely hot as it will be the medium to transfer the torque to the tires instead of the lockup clutch. At the least if you do modify anything make sure you get a tranny temp gauge installed. Also If you lockout the od the torque converter will lockup in Drive too. If you are good with the gas petal the torque converter will stay locked up also.

Disclaimer this is true to the best of my knowledge if you know differently. Post to where I can read about this and update my knowledge.
Thats a good point Rand..If you are very careful you can keep ther TC locked when you are in drive..The problem I have is with such a big load at freeway speeds it sometimes drops down into second in order to keep up with the traffic..instant 4500 rpm..too much for me..Second gear is geared way to far away from drive for my taste.Other than that I love the truck..
There is a mod for keeping the torque converter locked on F-250/350's. If you search on "torque converter lockup" you can read for hours. The mod involves grounding a pin out of the ECU. The mod is simple and can be done for less than $10.00. The disadvantage is you can not let the engine RPM drop below 1300 RPM or the pump in the trans does not produce enough pressure to keep the converter locked. Also bear in mind keeping the converter locked you must have the horsepower to get you over the hill, grade, etc. That is why you normally see this mod on PSD's and V-10's.
