I have an '05 PSD6.0, F250, Torkshift, cruise control, 4WD,etc. I am having an issue with the torque converter not staying locked up when towing on flat land roads amd the torkshift shifting down into a higher gear at every little grade or just about any minor elevation change. When on a flat road surface, and I let off the pedal to avoid running up on a vehicle, the engine speed drops right off, down by 400-500 rpm and stays there 'til a slight change in elev., when it all of a sudden swings up by 500 -650 rpm, grabbing the transmission gear and winding up to about 2500 or so, then it eases back and stays OK 'til the next event. I am open for any suggestion, Please. I want to get this condition corrected before warranty expires (32160 mi.) on truck now. Have had cruise reprogrammed, but I feel it could be the torque converter. It pulls great, but it free-wheels all the time, when not really pulling hard. My old '01 would stay locked right in 'til I got down to about 35 mph before you could feel it disengage. Has any one else experienced this ??
I would take it in immediately before the 36 k warranty runs out (you have 100K on engine) Present this info to the tecks and let them run a diagnostic on the truck. Also is the tow haul on or off?
I have the same truck and was having the same problem when towing larger trailers. I was worried it was the torque converter also. I then installed a towing module that didn't even adjust the tranny, but I will say that hauling those same trailers the truck rarely wants to downshift now (not to mention that I'm getting over 1mpg better towing now). I'm not saying that getting a tuner is the way to go, but I do think that Ford has the tranny set to downshift as a safety feature to keep the line pressures up. If you do take the truck in and they have a legitimate way to reprogram the tranny, let us know as I'm sure that most people are having this problem if they are pulling big trailers.
It's pretty normal for this transmission to do this. Mine has done it ever since new towing or not. I remedied it with an SCT and had the torque convertor locked with programming.
Where did you have your work done or did you do it yourself. I had a Hypertech PPIII in my '01 and it worked good. Different situation, but worked well.
