Bad Grinding Noise

Bad Grinding Noise
My buddy just installed a 302 and a C-4 in his 65. The engine was just rebuilt and so was the tranny. A new torque converter was installed. I got there late. Just before they started the engine, they added 5 qt of atf to the tranny. I do not know if they poured any atf into the torque converter before they put it into the tranny.
When they started the engine there was a loud grinding noise. And the tranny was very difficult to get into gear. It sounded like putting a standard into gear when the clutch won't disengage all the way. GGRRRRRRRG
If they did not put atf into the torque converter before installing it, would it cause this problem? Do you think the torque converter is ruined? Should they remove the transmission and put atf into the torque converter now?

If it'sa gear grinding noise, I don't it's fluid related...I've had a dry C4 before, but have had dry TH350's and TH400's, and they never grinded.
I'd be thinking it's something not right in the rebuild?
Other thing, I wonder if they got the TC engaged into the tranny...you sure they bolted the TC to the flex plate?

What Mike is getting at is that when the converter is installed into the tranny it has to be lined up exactly with the pump shaft. It's not simply a matter of sticking it in and calling it good, it has to be pushed in, turned, wiggled back and forth etc. till it finally clicks in and goes an extra 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch. If this isn't done, and then the engine is shoved in and tightened to the tranny the converter can be shoved back into the pump forcibly without being in proper alignment which can the crack or otherwise damage the pump housing. Chances are that this is what has happened...
