I think I goofed....

I just registered my F-250 on Friday and got a commercial tag. To make a long story short I have have 8000# GWVR on the registration. With the truck weighing in at 6670 #'s that only leaves 1330# carry or pull capability legally. I suppose another trip to the registration office is in order so that I can tow the tractor, horses, and other horse farm related stuff. What do you guys think....right step, or take the risk of getting pulled and fined?

Check the <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">owners manual</a> for the gross trailer towing capacity. (I think 18000# on the F-250) Then determine the gross capacity of the trailer you are using, combine that with the truck GVWR (found on the <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">sticker</a> on the drivers door jamb, near the post) and you have the total GVWR.

That also means that this baby can go to 24,500! I don't think I'll need that much weight. Thanks, a trip to the tag office tomorrow should straighten things out. I'm only going to put 16,000 GVRW on the registration, unless I get into Belgians we'll never pull more than that.

You can't tow 18K!

The F250 has a max trailer wt of 10K for a bumper pull and 14k or less for a gooseneck. It has a GCWR of 20K. 20K-6670 = 13330 max trailer wt as long as the GVWR doesn't exceed 8K or whatever is on your door sticker. That limits you to 1330 in tongue wt, cargo and passengers.

The GVWR on your registration should match the door sticker for the truck only, not the expected combined weight with the trailer. You'll get a much bigger fine towing if your GCWR is over 20K than you will for having the wrong GVWR on your registration.

You don't list the trucks specs and wether it has the towing package. If the truck is old with an I6 or a small V8 the towing capacity could be as little as 6-7K. With the big V8 (7.5l) or the V10 and an automatic, it's towing capacity will be as above. The F350's towing capacity doesn't go up, but it's cargo capacity and total gooseneck wt capacity is higher.

In North Carolina our registration states the the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer must not exceec the GVRW on the registration. I have 14k on my registration, I weighed the truck and trailer with our horses, tack, and everything else needed for a week long trip. It weighed in at 12,793 lbs. I highly recommend that you get the weight at least 1k over your maximum anticipated load....just in case you want to eat big steaks all week on a trip.

The truck I am refering to is a '93 F-250 supercab turbo diesel 7.3l. The max GVRW is just under 11k and towing package is OEM. Trailer weights are as you said per the manual that came with the truck. I changed the registration today to 14k...after hitching, loading and towing for weigh-in. I don't need more and can change it next year if we decide we do need more, at any time for that matter.
