I think this is the right place to ask about Escape.
The thing is I recently bought a 2004 (so my registration card says) Escape XLS automatic(the registration also says limited).
My research showed me that only 2004 automatic Escapes had 6cyl engines, and the manual Escapes had 4cyl 2000cc.
But when I got it to oilchange They told me it was only a 4cyl engine.
Fine I said, but I checked the Vin number that was in my registration on Ford Trucks VIN Decoder and it said my car was a 2005 4cyl 2300cc. And my registration card again says he was on the road july 2004.
Can this make any sense?
Automakers can begin to sell cars meeting specifications for a model year well before the calendar year begins. Typically in the U.S., the new model year begins in Sept - Nov, for instance the 2005 models hit the showrooms in Sept - Nov 2004 but sometimes it can begin quite a bit earlier. It is likely that your Escape is a 2005 model but that the model introduction began a bit earlier than typical. Having the 2.3L engine is certainly an important designation. I can't explain the XLS vs Limited issue though.
Try entering the vin at FordParts.com & click around to see if that's any help.
Using the site, the 2005 XLS 4-cly had either an automatic or manual transmission & there were 2 of each (4 total different transmissions).
