removing steering column (shift linkage)

when removing the steering column on the top part of the shift linkage does that just pull off of the steering column? or do i need to unbolt the shift linkage? On a 86 F-250 non tilt steering column

The shift linkage will pry out of the column, but can be a real bear if the bushing is old. I've usually had luck getting them to press out with slip-joint pliers.
