ok me and my son are restoring a 68 and we have finallay made it to the frame . Is there a alternative to surface rust removal without sand blasting? I have google the subject and there is way too many products out there to choose from from so I am looking for experience Thanks
I used a stripping disk for the easy to reach areas & hand sanded the not-so-easy areas. Once I had it as far as I could take it, I sprayed it with Ospho then painted with POR-15. I used the same process for one of our Bronco's but used Rustoleum for that since its a mud truck. I know I'll have to touch it up now & then, but we didn't want to go through the expense of POR with the Bronco.
We bought a quart of POR-15 to start with on our 41 truck and that quart was more than enough to do the frame and much more. Put the remainder in the fridge and still using the remainder for other stuff,.
Baking Soda Blasting, will take it down to bare metal in a couple hours. You just rinse off the soda when they are done. It won't harm wiring, glass, chrome or rubber unless they sit on it for awhile. Look them up in the yellow pages. I'd find AC overtime work, on a hot roof in July, before I'd go thru stripping again.
I didn't find a drill & a good stripping wheel all that bad. But then I didn't do it all in one shot either. I sandblasted everything on our 1941 and although a pain, it went good. For our other vehicles, I just wheel it as I don't have all the crap to clean up, I'm usually doing it in stages, as time permits and I don't have to get dressed up (in that sandblasting drab).
4 1/2" grinder and a twisted wire wheel cup makes short work of most everything. I do have a blaster, but only use it for hard to reach spots. By the way, soda blasting won't even faze rust.
