I have a chassis from what I believe is an 1985 F-350 under my truck. Is the a VIN stamped on the frame somewhere?
On my 1980, the vin is stamped on top of the passenger side frame rail, right below the heater box. It's only a partial though, not sure what the 85 will show.
Most trucks have it there, but occasionally it is "hidden" on the passenger frame rail under the cab approximately under the butt of the passenger. You need a small dentist's type mirror to see it. I have seen a few trucks that had it in both locations, but by far a single stamp on the passenger frame rail below the heater box is the most common.
Like stated above, the VIN on the frame is only a partial. My memory is a bit hazy as I haven't done any of that stuff in a while so I dug up one of my old posts.
All that's on the frame rail is the model designation, model year, plant and sequence number.
For example, my 81 F100(which is now the 86 diesel in my sig...)
The complete 17 character VIN is 2FTCF10E9BCA40098
What's on the frame is F10BCA40098.
So, not only is the VIN on the frame only a partial, it's also broken up.. The Manufacturer Identifier(first three #'s,) brake system/GVWR class(4th number,) engine code(8th character) and check digit(9th position) are missing
