i needed a bigger truck had a chevy 1500. found a a 99 w/a 5.4 for the right price. does everythig i need it to with 158,434 on it. first full size ford and i love it.
I only drove bombardier sleds then the canadian govt bailed them out. Then they outsourced lots of parts to mexico. I only drove GMC then they got bailed out. I now have '11 F350. I thinks its pathetic how they treated there employees who have lost there pensions by mismanagement.
I've owned primarily GM trucks for the past 25 years, and they have gotten progressively worse as time goes on. The last one, a '97 Suburban was a total nightmare. Transmissions (3 by 80K), intake leaks, A/C problems, electrical issues, fuel pump, steering problems and on and on and on. I feel as though I totally restored it by the time it had 80,000 miles on it. Then I looked at the '88 Mustang next to it in the garage with 150,000 miles on it. It had a heater core replaced about 20 years ago and the driver's side door handle broke about 15 years ago. That's it. Not one issue ever. It has never seen a tow truck. It has been abused at times. The doors still open and close like new. So I bought an '04 F250 a couple years ago. It has been the picture of reliability, and now with 97K on the clock it has had zero problems, ever. Not with the original owner and not with me. It's a keeper and is the reason I will never, ever own another GM product as long as I live.
My family was die hard GM. I bought my first truyck right out of high school, a GMC S-15 4X4. It was honestly ready for the scrap yard at 36,000 miles. Blew out the trans, both front C/V axles and transfer case in one shot! Traded it in on my first Ford and never looked back! However, in hindsight, it was pretty much my fault...I lifted it, had 33" mudders on it and a supercharger. Not what the poor little thing was made for, but it steered me in the right direction
I bought my F-550 because it was the only crew-cab with a dump that I could find. I've owned 44 vehicles since I started driving, but never a super duty. It has grown on me though, I like the layout and quality of it.
My personal truck is an '02 Dodge diesel 2500 6 speed 4x4 and I love the drivetrain and ride (aftermarket suspension), but like all Dodge trucks of that era the body is kinda flimsy. If I had a choice of marrying the 2 SD truck + Cummins engine, I'd be a happy camper.
I really don't have a brand loyalty and I really don't care one bit for absurdly biased subjective opinions about manufacturers, but I would definitely buy another SD.
Well the short answer is i had such good luck with the first one i ever bought, a Ranger new in 1987. It had over 303k when i sold it in 2002. Never had a major repair on it and it is still running around town to the guy i sold it to.I also had a second 87 Ranger 4x4 that served me very well with out much trouble. So when i decided to up size to a big truck the F250 was a no brainer.
And yes i could do a Ford ad. And a few friends have bought Ford on my advice!
Ive owned several vehicles since I started driving in 94.
91 F150 Ex Cab 300 Straight 6 w/ 5 speed - Had some issues, but easily fixed. Ran it without oil(or an oil pump) for about a week out of necessity. Put the new oil pump in, and started up and ran without so much as a tap from the engine. Ended up running head on into a pole. Totalled
87 Cadillac Sedan Deville with 5.7l diesel - ran pretty decent, until the engine blew with no warning, leaving me stranded on the highway in the middle of the night
72 Cadillac Coup Deville - smooth running car. Huge doors...but ****ty wiring. Turned the ignition one morning to go to a job interview and fried all the wiring. Needless to say I didnt get the job.
78 Trans Am - Great running car after about a year of working on it off and on. Mother sold it out when I left for the Navy.
95 Thunderbird - Probably one of the best cars I have ever owned. Blew a head gasket, but it was covered under a recall for the V6 engine that year, and Ford replaced the entire engine for free with a free rental car until it was done. Traded it for a 02 Cavalier.
02 Cavalier - Wife picked it out. Didnt like it from the get. Too small for someone my size to drive. We ended up getting a divorce and with that...the car was gone.
04 Silverado Z71 - Was initially impressed with it, until the night I decided to take it offroad and get it dirty. I was surprised that with all the money they were charging, they couldve at least reenforced a few things like the fog lights. The bracket (which was flimsy plastic) snapped on my first run through the mud, and I never found it. $150 later I had a new one. Push button 4 wheel drive stopped working about a week after I bought it. Message center on the dash went blank, then power windows went on the fritz. Got rid of that one quick.
87 IROC Camaro - Had nothing but problems with it from the moment I got it. Bought the car with what seemed like a good motor, until about a month after I got it home. I spent a good month rebuilding it due to numerous issues. Traded it off for a 93 Z28.
93 Z28 - good engine, good transmission, the rest of the car was ****. Blew out the rear end and left me stranded between Columbia, SC and Savannah, GA.
88 Mustang GT - Absolutely loved that car. Bought it in 2009, and the interior looked like it did in 88. Everything worked like it was supposed to. Ran like a champ and sounded like a demon. Got PCS orders to NY, and decided to sell it. Some jackass test drove it, spun a main bearing, then brought it back to me to fix. Ended up selling it for a fraction of what it was worth.
03 Ford Escape - Wife's ride. Owned it since 2007. Driven it all over the country, and still runs like it did when I bought it. Tried to talk her into trading it in...but wife wont let it go. Still running like a champ today.
00 F250 Super Duty SC - Had it less than a year. Hands down one of the best I have ever owned. No major issues. Just fixing minor things here and there that are more of an annoyance than anything else.
As you can see from my record....Ford has always treated me better than GM products. Ford's customer service could use a little work, but I've been extremely happy with their vehicles. GM always seems to leave me broke, or stranded. Dont have any real experience with Dodge though. Wouldny mind owning one of their megacabs with a Cummins though.
I buy ford for reliability and quality of product. I have owned a 84, 90, 92, 97, 99, and now I own a 04. All had 150k plus before I got rid of them and had no majors issues. Started with Ford and will end with ford. Wife's family is die hard GM and she drives a Escape and would not trade it for the world.
I bought a Ford out of desperation and little else. I very much miss my 03 Duramax Chevy and wish I didn't have to give it up but the job situation forced it. Found the old rusty F-350 for $5500 smakers and with a 7.3, so it was very hard to turn down. Please don't misunderstand, I have nothing against Ford products in the very least, I just miss my Dmax. My favorite diesel has always been IH so Ford trucks have always been a reliable back up for me, just wish my Allison trans was behind it instead of the 4R100. This most likely will be the last Ford for me unless they go back to IH for power plants but I'm just brand loyal like that. I'd probably consider a Toyota if it had an American built IH although I'm not sure I could go that far. If I ever had the financial means I would be driving an RXT or a CXT International.
Sorry, not trying to start any thing, just the circumstances about it have sucked, big time. I'm very thankful that I found such a good running truck as I did with this one. One tie rod end a new stabilizer shock and a few door latch repairs and it was good to go. Some one had put a lot into it and it must have been beautiful when it was new!
