I test drove an 08 V10 this morning and on start up there was a very loud ticking noise from underneath near where the exhaust starts that rose and fell with the rpms. It then seemed to disappear after driving it for a bit. Is this normal operation? Or something to steer clear of? The truck drove great otherwise.
That could be one or more broken exhaust manifold studs. The noise is caused by a leak where the studs are broken and as the metal heats up, the leak stops. Pretty common problem with the V10 and an easy fix for a dealer.
Is there a way to see and verify they are broken. Gotta prove it because the dealer gave me the "all the V10's do this when cold". Sure enough the others on the lot did the same??? It only has 24k miles.
It definitely went away after test driving it and I restarted it about 5 times in the 30 minute time they were appraising my current truck. I just do not want to possibly purchase this vehicle and have it turn out to be something bad. Hmmm.
It should be pretty easy to see whether the exhaust manifold studs are rusted out. Don't believe that bs line. Mine makes no such noise. I looked at one before I bought mine that had half the studs gone on the drivers side. Take a flashlight with you so you can see clearly, and run a magnet over the dipstick after a test drive to see if you pick up any metal from the oil. For a real safe feeling, do that to the tranny dipstick too.
Mine does not tick unless: I start it up cold and shut it down within 1 minute and before it gets warm. It does not tick on that start up but will always tick on the next start up. The tick goes away after a couple minutes. If I make sure the truck runs for at least 5 on the first start up, then there is no ticking on the second start up - ever.
I purchased the truck and still notice the ticking under acceleration. Very light acceleration does not bring the noise, nor does revving the enging, only accelerating. Really sounds like some sort of exhaust leak. I thought it was minor at first but now I need to dig in. It runs fine otherwise. On cold start ups you hear it for a while but after it warms up you no longer hear it at idle. Grrrrrr!
Thanks to good techs and Fords emissions warranty I now have a new exhaust manifold and NO ticking! This V10 is a beast! I mean most of you already know that but man this thing can move! Sure loves fuel but so did my 5.4 and that thing really had no guts. So the trade off for a 1 mpg difference (lie-o-meter) is fine with me. I'll get my hand calculated numbers soon!
