the top end started ticking after highway runs.drove around town 4 a few and ticking quit.only after highway runs would it tick.after a while no oil pressure below 2000 rpm's.put new oil pump and screen on and did not fix still no pressure at idle.and when run as it warms up takes more rpm's for pressure to come up!
When you changed the oil pump and screen, what was the condition of the pump, screen and oil pan? Were they fairly clean or was there a lot of gooey gunk over everything? If goo and gunk were present in abundance, you may have some lines plugged up that restrict the flow of oil though the engine.
Have you taken off one of the valve covers? What was its condition and the condition of the top of the head?
When you say there was no oil pressure after highway runs, do you have a direct reading gauge or are you relying on the Ranger's pressure/no pressure gauge (basically an on/off switch)?
The 2.9L where known for that problem. Most of the time it was because of a rear main bearing. The bearing can spin out of place and block the oil hole. Some where also know for the oil return holes to plug up, especially considering the miles you have on it
