I get a quick tick tick tick, when I start it up cold in the mornings.
My 5.4 does it , but at 200k miles, what ever.
is this normal at 1300mi
Yeah, I notice it every once in a while too - almost sounds like the top end of the motor doesn't have any oil and the rockers are ticking for 5 or 10 seconds! Haven't mentioned it to the dealer yet 'cuz I'm only at about 1300 miles on mine also.
Had the same problem awhile back.. found out it was the cheap oil filters, outfits like Jiffy Lub, etc were using. The filters don't have anti siphon built in to prevent oil from draining out the filter. I usually do my own oil changes, but was moving and didn't have the time.. Never experienced the problem when I used a good oil filter like Fram, Wix. or Napa.
This was on here a couple of months ago and I do not remember who on here posted what it was. Basically though it is a air purge valve for the fuel system. He was skeptical until the technician showed him where the noise was coming from and what it was. Then he put a little air in the line and started the truck and it actuated like it was supposed. I have since checked with my mechanic and he has verified this as well. I was the same way you were, I thought it was a lifter or something. Glad to find out it wasn't.
I dont think its cheap filters unless Ford is using cheap filters out of the factory.
The fuel thing is worth checking into. Does it harm the motor?
My 05 with 200k has been doing it for years and I always thought it was oil /lifter tick

I read this too. just don't remember where or when this was mentioned.
Found this on the internet..:
"Anti-Drainback Valve. Some oil filter mountings may allow oil to drain out of the filter through the oil pump when the engine is stopped. When the engine is next started, oil must refill the filter before full oil pressure reaches the engine. The anti-drainback valve, included in the filter when required, prevents oil from draining out of the filter. This anti-drainback valve is actually a rubber flap that covers the inside of the inlet holes of the filter. When the oil pump starts pumping oil, the pressure will unseat the flap. The purpose of this valve is to keep the oil filter filled at all times, so when the engine is started there will be an almost instantaneous supply of oil to the engine."
If this is happening, you going to get noise from the engine for a few seconds if the filter not a quality type filter..such as some Jiffy Lub and those Quiky Lub places use..
