I have a 99 f250 l/d 4 door super cab 2wd and it ticks loud when i start it and fades a little when revved and quiets down after in warms up about 10 min after running, oil is changed every 4000km with good brand oil, and has a faint tick after warm but fades when accelerating or revving, sounds like a diesel ,there is no engine light and no codes when put on a computer, doesnt seem to have any power loss, never drove a brand new 2 valve 5.4 but shes got go. If some one could help me trouble shoot that'd be awsome, thanks

Sounds like the classic broken exhaust manifold studs. Common on the 2V engines. They allow the exhaust to leak at the head and as they heat up and expand, they kinda seal them selves off.

 

it doesnt seem like an exhaust leak but possibly can be i just did flowmaster duals and got a new inspection, i thought the sound was coming from my injectors but its so hard to tell cause u can hear it in the wheel wells to, because i dont think well should say hope it isnt anything to seriouse because she idles smooth no lights on and will leave 2(limited slip) 3 meter black strips goin down a slight hill.

 

I have been told it is piston slap. If it truly is than it doesn't hurt anything apparently except your pride. I believe its been posted on this site before.

You might also try a motorcraft oil filter. i had a similar noise, although didn't sound as bad as what you describe. i always used FRAM or some other similar type oil filter. Went to a motorcraft filter and its hasn't done it since.

 

Did you resolve your problem? I have the same issue and am trying to get some leads on diagnosing the problem (will try later in the week I have to use the truck for a couple more work days before i can get to this.. how long did you have the ticking issue? and did you tow with it without incident?

 

My 5.4 equipped Superduty had an annoying ticking sound,,local mechanic told me to check torque on all my spark plugs,,Murphys law struck again,,,, the last one I checked #4 was just past finger tight,,torqued it down and the ticking is gone!

 

Duallydon- Was your noise consistent all the time or did it quiet down shortly after starting it ?

 

The ticking was present all the time,,,most people commented here that it is the way Ford 5.4 sound,,others pointed at possible broken exhaust bolts,,,though possible,,,here on my superduty,,the plug was the culprit,,,,new plug and coil for insurance,,the engine now purrs!!!!

 

You need a new timing chain set.
