My 01 F-150 AC starting blowing cool air and took into my shop. They told me the compressor was shot. I had about 1/2 pound recharge last summer and they injected dye. They could not find any leaks except at the compressor in two spots.
So they quoted me just under $800 with a condensor which included labor. I don't have that much and I was wondering what should be replaced besides the compressor? I want to shop for my own parts to see if I can save as much as I can.
depends on what happened to the compressor. If it is "trashed" little parts can go everywhere. Compressor, condensor and labor for $800 might not be too bad. Check prices just on those, and the expansion valve.
Thanks Steve. I asked that question about blown up and they told me no. It actually still works and will blow cold air once RPM's are up for a few minutes it is just leaking they said so I am assuming it will blow if I do not get it fixed fairly soon. Now it acts like it is low on refigerant but it had a 1/2 pound added last September.
I have priced Motorcraft parts from Oreilly and I can save about $100.
I had my compressor replaced at the end of the summer in '09. The shop replaced the compressor, orifice tube, and receiver dryer (both required for the warranty of the compressor) and it cost $850. The AC has been ice cold ever since. The condenser was okay.
Well I decided to check for myself. I was not convinced the compressor was bad since it was acting just like it was low on refigerant.
The compressor is impossible to see where the lines connect so I degreased the hell out of it last week and last night did the feel thing. I can feel where the refigerant is leaking out and it is right at the connection of the high pressure line. No where else could I see refigerant with a black light or by feel.
A friend suggested that I buy a can of stop leak refigerant because it probably just a o ring.
So I am pondering wether to try the stop leak for awhile and then replace the o ring if it doesnt stop leaking, or just replace the o ring. Depends on how lazy I am.
Has anyone tried the stop leak refigerant?
By the way, the best prices I found anywhere was rockauto.com. It was $450 for compressor, orfice, dryer, and condesor. I did not price the cheaper parts that was all motorcraft parts. The shop was going to charge $225 labor.
Are you sure your condensor is even bad/in need of replacement? And replacing an o-ring isn't as easy as just pulling the line off, replacing the o-ring, and reinstalling the line. You have to properly evacuate the system and then properly recharge the system with refrigerant/oil or you will burn of your compressor.

Your friend is not a friend, friends don't let friends use stop leak.
You do realize that $800 installed with a warranty is not bad? I just spent $1200 having a compressor, hose, orifice, and accumulator replaced on my van, and I supplied the hose. This was also including a flush, which is mandator when a compressor has failed.
Not the compressor. I put two cans of regular 134 in it. The compressor purrs like a kitten now and blows ice cold air at idle. The only place it is leaking is at the high side connection to the compressor. I went ahead and pulled the compressor loose because I needed a new belt anyway. I tried tighening the connection and got about a 1/4 turn but was afraid to do more. With a black light there was no other leaks. I will order a new dryer and o ring kit if it continues to leak.
