Power steering question

I replaced my pump on my 1997 4.6 4WD truck and have had a lag or temporary loss in low RPM situations. It is not a total loss but temporary. I have come to realize that I put the wrong type of power steering fluid in the system. I do not have a squeal or any noise from the pump. What are the chances of removing the fluid and replacing it with the correct fluid that I do not need to replace the pump? Thanks

PS pumps don't like the wrong fluid, chances are by the time it starts cutting out that it is too late, but you can try changing out the fluid. The correct fluid is probably Mercon ATF, which has been superceeded by Mercon V.
