I have a '91 F-150 2WD with man. trans. I went to get the freon in the A/C recharged and my mechanic told me that the shaft in the a/c compressor is broken. Can you get just the shaft for the compressor or will i need to buy a whole new compressor unit?
Josh ,
You have a couple of options here . I dont think its worth rebuilding , the cost of that vs a new compressor ,I think you ll find a new compressor is a better deal. Also you might want to consider switching to R134a ? Personally , I think the whole R134a stuff was / is a scam . I recall back in 92 or 93 ...R12 was going to be all gone in 2 yrs . Eight yrs later guess what ...you can still buy R12 ...Of course at a much inflated price . No question R12 cools better , but Im sure the day will come when R12 is gone .

R12 should pretty much be gone by next year. I would retro fit to 134a. The parts that you will need to change to repair your system the correct way will be the same no matter which coolant you use. Under no circumstances use anything other than r12 or r134a.
Yes, a new compressor is great opportunity to convert system to HFC-134a. 134a only costs 5-6$ per can, no regulations to buy it. To buy R-12, you need the Certificate, and lotsa $$$$$.
