Pull your brakes and make sure they are working right and not hanging up. You may want to try full synthetic oil. New plugs,air filter and fuel filter. Clean your MAF sensor with CRC MAF cleaner. Good luck
i have 265s. would a diesel get any better gas mileage, my buddy said he gets like 20mpg and he has the same truck as me but with a 7.3l
I don't think that 265 tires where stock with that truck. I would check your odometer with a GPS and see if the computer was calibrated for the bigger tire. You may be getting better mileage than you think.
that would be my low when I'm towing 7500lbs... My high is 15.9 empty at 63mph.
And my last van had the 7.3PSD which would consistently get 18.5MPG empty at 65mph and towing would get 14mpg the same load. But I could carefully squeeze 20-21 mpg empty on longgg trips.
Some tips that help my mpg's;
Check out the NitroFill website. Run my tires @ called for 75psi. Didn't buy it for the ride quality....it's a truck, and at 8K pounds, doesn't take much of a reduction of tire pressure to make a differance in mpg. Also longer tire life, to which I can attest to.
I put a dose of StarTron in the tank at every fill up. Check out their website also for information on phase seperation, do some objective thinking on the subject, and then tell me how your mpg's are after that. You WILL get better mileage. Run it in my 200hp OMC o/b motor & 2 motorcycles.
Installed the K&N FIPK kit and cleaned my MAF correctly. Bought and installed the SCT/5 Star tuner from Mike. You hope to reap some benefit from an investment, and I was flat out impressed with how the tunes made the beast so much better to drive. Bottom line......my V10 is getting between 15 & 16 MPG all the time. I don't try to figure city out, it's not where I do my driving. That's what my motorcycle is for.
Besides all the tips you've already gotten, put a rotten egg under the go-pedal.
For the record, the SD since it's debut in '99 had both 235/85R16's, and 265/75R16's available.
I had the 235's, went to 265's, saw no difference in MPGs. I now run 285/75R16's which are slightly larger, and now the odometer is dead accurate to within 1MPH at 60MPH
My V10's get between 8-12 mpg towing 10K. This varies because of the wind, hills and if I'm in a hurry.
I have no idea what the new truck gets in the city as I don't live in the city. But commuting into the city I usually get 11-14mpg.
I have no idea why anyone would buy a big truck of any sort and use it as a daily driver in the city.
There's sure room here for a tire thread, but the correct pressure for the vehicle was where I was going. My tires are B F Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A in the 265 size. They aren't my preferred make, which would be Michelins, but were new on the truck when I bought it. I've tried to be objective regards my NitroFill investment, and the results have met my expectations. No loss of pressure in a year, run cooler in the summer (Florida), no loss of pressure in the winter (we've had temps in the 20's last couple of years), have rotated and check ever 5K miles as part of my service. Considering new tire costs, an extra claimed 10K miles would be great......hell, I'd be happy with half that.
Easy on the pedal pays the most dividen.....yup.
There....second post, all in the same day. Al Norcross
