Hey all -
'99 SD, V-10 automatic. When I take off from a light I feel this 'thump' in the truck, almost like if an object in the bed was sliding back and hitting the tailgate, but not as severe. Is this the slip joint noise I've read about?
I agree with Rick. Sounds like your slip joint is sticking. Couple of things to add....
Make SURE you chock the wheels before disconnecting the driveshaft. You don't want your truck rolling down the road/driveway...or worse, over you while you are under the truck
I use Super White Grease from NAPA. Lasts longer than the Ford grease...
Shift into neutral to make it easier to R&R the driveshaft
Check the U-joint bolts a day or two later to make sure they aren't working themselves loose.
Don't over-grease. Too much will have a hydro lock effect and can damage other parts of your drive-train. Test by inserting the collar all the way down onto the splined shaft to make sure it has full travel.
Thanks for all the responses guys. For whatever reason, I can't open the TSB list in the Tech Section here at work. Someone told me there was a TSB for this.
The fix is obviously as simple as falling out of bed. Never in a thousand years would have thought it was the culprit though.
Remember the first time I felt that thump immediately assumed the trans or something was about to always thinking the worst oh and you have seen my face when the speed sensor thing on top of the back axle went bad holychit man
