My neighbor just picked up his new 4x4 with the Hemi in it. He is always bragging how he will wipe my superduty (2000 V10, reg cab, 2wd, 3.73).
My truck is stock except for a K&N filter and a Flowmaster muffler.
Has anybody been to the line with the Hemi? Is it worth racing him to shut him up? Do i have a chance?
I drove a new Hemi around January and I wasn't impressed. It was more than the 4.7 Quad cab my bud bought but the one that I drove certainly was no match for my 325 HP Mark VII. I haven't driven a Ford V 10 so I have nothing to offer for comparison. Run him, then we'll all know.
I work at Thrifty Car Rental, and because we're mainly owned by Chrysler, we mainly carry Dodge & Chrysler products in our fleet. We've got a Dodge 2500 reg. cab long bed 2wd pickups, with the 5.7l Hemi in them. I've driven it, and raced against it. The Hemi is a nice engine no doubt...but don't get frightened when you see 345hp. The Hemi's torque numbers are 375 ft.lb. compared to 425 ft.lb in our V-10's. Due to this, in my opinion, the Dodge feels sluggish off the line and seems to take FOREVER to build up speed. But when it does...boy does it go! I do give the Dodge boys a big plus with the smooth exhaust note though! Racing against it, I always dusted the Dodge off the line, but it did catch up to my rear before we had to slow down (about a good mile of straight road.) I would love to race a Dodge Hemi thats equipped like my truck, and not a bare bones model. I say go for it, you'll teach that Dodge what having two extra cylinders is all about.
I have driven a 3/4 ton 4x4 w/5.7 hemi. Nice but i wouldn't be afraid of one. The 5.7 makes its power at a higher rpm range than the v-10. its 345hp is at around 4200 rpm.and with only a 3.48 troke it will never make the tq that the v-10 has. now if they stretch out the stroke and get a few more cubes, then look out.It is interesting that it is so close to being a smaller copy of the old 426 hemi.Be neat in a car.
If he has a 1500 Hemi he will destroy you but if he has a 2500 or 3500 Hemi you can probably beat him or make it so close that he'll keep his mouth shut. Take a look at the Hemi's torque curve. It has to rev up to 3200 rpms just to make 350lb-ft . Your V10's already rated at 400lb-ft at 2000rpms.
That extra 1500 or 2000lbs of weight between the Ram 1500 and 2500 will make all the difference in acceleration. Most of the people that tow with a Ram Hemi say it's miserable at moving weight.
A few weeks ago I was towing the 16ft enclosed with 2 atvs inside and 1 in the bed-total weight of trailer and machines is about 4900lbs. Some Ram pulling a trailer had been closely pacing me for several miles, both of us cruising at 60mph. Started up a long interstate hill and for whatever reason the guy decides he's going to pass me. My wife was asleep , so I waited until his front bumper got close to the back of the cab (and it took a while) and no traffic was around so I stomped it up to about 73mph and left him behind very easily. I was pretty impressed.
They blew by me going down the other side but I had slowed back down to my normal speed. When they went I saw the truck was a 2500 quad cab Hemi. The trailer was a smaller livestock trailer (maybe 12') with one animal in it.
I think you have very good odds. Your truck is a 2wd and his is 4wd. That's a big weight difference. Even though your motor weighs a ton, I would put the odds in your favor.
I have raced 2 F250 SD 4X4 V10s against my 5.4, F250LD 4X4. I was able to walk away from both of them. Just my experiance.
To clear the air, in each race I was not towing anything and nether were they. I would not want to race against them with a heavy load.

Hey old Friend, You know i have both, a Hemi and a V10, i know the answer to this thread, meet me on Rod Field any time! you can have the line, I'll take 60 and the 1/4, Lets go rompin sometime!
2003 2500 quadcab Hemi 345hp 4.10 rearend (positraction)
The Hemi with the regular tranny is ok, but you have to be in the one with 4.10's. Still sluggish off the line, but trust me the big V10 will fall behind before 60, the hell with the torque numbers. No matter what "munkey" it is so fun blowing away Acura's and Honda's, v10 or hemi nothing like wasting rice burners. Lets get together sometime.
I haven't personally done it, but I'm 99% sure my 460 would do the same, besides the fact that my exhaust pipe is about even w/their driver's window. MUWAHAHAHAHA...oops, sorry. Not to get off subject...carry on!
