For the shift kit, you don't have to drop the transmission, but it can get messy. Even after you've drained all the fluid and dropped the pan, it will drip for hours so having a plastic bag or really big catch pan is a good idea.
Correct about the torque converter. Just be sure to use a little assembly grease on the new one before installing it to prevent damaging the seal. The converter will slide back with three bumps. Input shaft, front seal, and pump gear. Make sure its all the way in before attempting to reinstall the transmission.
Measure the backset difference between the mating surface of the old torque converter and the bell housing before removing the old converter so you have what to compare against when checking the new one. I think you will be looking for 7/8" - 1" if I remember right. If the pump gear doesn't engage, it will be less than half inch and you'll know somethings wrong.
Its usually not that hard, but having the transmission upright seems to help the pump gear find the converter hub. If you allow the transmission to roll to either side, the pump gear may roll to the side and you won't be able to get them aligned.
Ok, sounds like I can do it. I don't have a transmission jack though so it might get difficult with my normal car jack, hmmm. I'll see what the trans. guy wants for the job, I think he quoted me $600 for labor + parts.
When did they start putting C6's in? Im not really sure what mine has and I have been reading up on all this lately. OP said that he had the tranny rebuilt with a stage 2 shift kit but Im not sure if he had it built at ford, somewhere else, or did it himself.
its very easy to tell if you have an old 3 speed or an E40D just by the way it drives.
C6 is basic.this is what you'll feel after you put 'er in D
a shift into 2nd gear,then a shift into 3rd (3rd is just a direct 1:1 drive.)
thats it.all done.
with your '94,you know you have the E40D (electronic 4 speed Over Drive) trans.because you have an OD on/off switch.
this is what you feel after putting 'er in D
a shift into 2nd gear, then a shift into 3rd gear (this is where the C6 ends) then you'll feel a "semi shift" this is the torque converter locking up.now you surpassed the old c6 by leaps and bounds, because now your directly connected, and the trans temps will fall well below that of a c6,and fuel economy will rise over the c6.
next you'll feel the final shift into 4th gear (OD) which is your economy gear, and rpms will drop.
there is no mistaking the E40D with a C6 or visa versa.you can set a blind man in each truck, and he'll know what trans it is with ease.
Did you know if you see a woman eating a bowl of cornflakes while driving, And you swerve toward, her she throws the bowl milk and all, in the back seat?
Lots of good stuff here,,when I rebuilt mine we changed the aluminun 3 planetarie for steel with 5 planetaries, plastic pieces changed for metal, changed the solenoids, heavy duty tc, deep sump, external cooler ( bypassed the radiator cooler) with a fan,and a trans command unit (that made a big difference in towing) and use about 14 qts of amsoil synthetic gauge says 180 unloaded and about 225 with trailer and car attached.
