my local junkyard just got an 90 f-150 4wd with a t-18 tranny in it, i have an 89 bronco with an m5od in it, sometime this year or next im planning to do solid axles, dana 60 front sterling 10.25 rear and mabey a 351 w, im looking for something stronger and more reliable and i was wondering if the t-18 would be a good choice i dont want to lose driveability and gas mileage i little wouldnt hurt mabey a mile or two per gallon and i know the zf tranny would be the best choice but i do not have access to one of those so what do you guys think even if i were to keep the stock set up would the t-18 be better than the m5od?
I had a T-18 in a CJ7. It was a Ford tranny with an over built 289 pushing close to 550 HP. The transmission was never a problem or worry. Plus its small enough to rebuild on a work bench. Check ot PartsMike® Online for all your T-18 needs. I bought a shift rail rebuild kit from them and Mike personally e-mailed me and made sure I was getting exactly what I needed.
I'm guessing you'll be putting that on 44" tires, so the direct 4th in the T18 will be just fine. Seriously, gas mileage concerns on that rig would be like a helicopter door gunner worrying about collecting his brass.
omg that is to funny i suppose yer right gas mileage is irrelevant at that point, did the t-18s come in the 90 f-150s? i mean the trans code is t on the truck this is comeing out of i just wanna make sure its a t-18 not like a t-98 or something and no not 44s either 33s or 35s
its definetly a t-18 looks just like it, it has allthe right castings and stuff on the side with the borg warner logo, its just that i like to confirm with numbers and those are pretty worn barely legible.
even stranger is that it does in fact belong to that truck, my chilton book lists the f150 250 and bronco as candidates for the t-18 which is nice
from bearing cap to bearing cap the front driveshaft is 3 inches shorter than mine but i cant tell if its a different driveshaft or if its actually the same one i have just compressed more at the slip yoke.
the back of the t-18 set up is interesting my tranny has a fixed yoke thats relatively close to the t-case the t-18's tailshaft portion protrudes more and has a slip yoke with any luck itll be a bolt in job
will the t-18s slip yoke cause a problem cause my tranny has a fixed yoke the slip yoke is part of the driveshaft
and how does the t-18 shift what would you guys rate it against the m5odr2
