Argh, help! Windshield leaking, can the Ex be driven?
My wife just called, for the first time up here in MN we are having a good rain and not snow/sleet/ice and water is dripping on her foot. I haven't read about what can happen other than the GEM gets fried. Do I need to have her park it and go pull the battery cables and wait for it to dry out?
I've had computer modules go bad in other vehicles and they cause a cascade module failure down the line...expensive, fast. I don't want that again.
Forgot to mention, recently the interior lights sometimes don't like to turn off...as I was thinking about it last night I was wondering if the windshield was leaking and dripping on the GEM. The dealer put in a new windshield before we bought it in Jan. so I'm guessing that is the issue.
With or without driving you will still have water going in so you will want that taken care off ASAP. They should have a leak wrrnt on it so if you can take it back there that best, if not any local glass shop should be able to take care of it.
Like you said lotsa issues with water in there, gem, fuse box corrosion, all sorts of electrical issues.
Interior light issue is more than likely one of the door switches. They are built in to the latch on the X so you will want to spray them all liberally with a lube, wd or silicone type spray, and work the doors open/ closed for a few times to get em going again.
Well, it's in the driveway hibernatining. I got home and pulled the battery cables. Then I looked at the dash and noticed some water on the bottom of the fuse access cover. Pulled that and there was water all over the backside. Pulled the actual fuse cover and it was full of water. Pulled the fuse block, but there wasn't too much water on the back. After looking around I pulled the A-pillar and it looks like water is leaking in from the drivers side upper corner. Fun times, I'll have to check in with places tomorrow and get it fixed.
Mine was leaking last year, I took it to a reputable local glass place and they told me they could try to remove it and re-install it but there was a great chance of breaking it and I would have to pay for a new windshield or they could try to just patch the seal which they did and worked fine. Leak was above the mirror.
The dealer should provide you with some compensation, they did a faulty install. Check the glass and make sure its a quality windshield- I bought a car in TX 2 years ago and they put a brand new windshield in when I picked it up. It wasnt until the drive home to PA that I noticed the wave in the passenger side because it was cheap glass.
At least you found it before it got bad. Kudos to your wife for reporting it to you.
LOL, she couldn't have missed it. It was soaking her foot with drips. The floor mat also had water pooling in it. After looking at it I asked her if it was worse when she turned left and she gave me a funny look and asked how I could tell that, haha. But, I'm glad we found it and it doesn't look like there will be any permanent damage.

I doubt I'll get any compensation, but I've got an email off to the dealer anyway. I did give a quick look at the glass to see if I could see a brand name. There were some markings on the passenger side, but no brand that I could make out. I'll have to look again when its not 40 degrees and raining. For now I have painters tape along the top molding, not ideal, but it should help at least.
I've got it scheduled for Fri, they said since it will be 65 it might come out ok. We'll see.
The painters tape will be harder to remove, if you use electrical tape it would be better.
90% of the time it not worth the risk to take out, but a quick look from the glass guys would determine that or just a fix from inside. The key is to take the mouldings inside off, even the visor to work around the head liner. How do I know, cuz I'm inthe trade and been there done that.

Thanks for the heads up, electrical tape will look better too.
Dang, so drop the overhead console too? The headliner wasn't wet at all, just the drivers side a-piller. The silicon was wet in the upper corner and then dripping down. It would drip off the metal that is pinched together on the a-piller. But, I didn't have great light and I have no idea what it looks like under the edges of the windshild so there could be more going on.
sorry jeff if I may have said it wrong. The shop may need to just tug that corner or the head liner down a bit and sometimes it is easier to take off the visor on that side and pillar cover. It should be no problem for them to do this, and what ever clean up before if they just seal it. The seal will need to be done from the inside. Being just recently put in there should be no rust under there so no big issues.
When ever I do a w/s and see that there are wires down a column trim, it comes off first so I can determine that the wires will not get cut during removal. On the ford trucks the head liner doesnt come down far into the w/s area so it should not be removed, just maybe slightly pulled down to work in there.
Ok, sounds good. I took the painters tape last night and put on electical tape...while it was snowing. It all melted, but still, winter doesn't want to give up.
I had the windshield removed in a truck of mine a few months ago to try and reseal it. They were able to do it without destroying it, but a week later I noticed a crack growing out of the corner that kept getting bigger and bigger. There was no impact damage so it must have started from the stress of removal/install. I ended up having to get a new windshield anyway so if your having it removed to do any resealing, I recommend going all out with new glass the first time as mentioned above.
Just an update, the windshield guy couldn't make it. But after hearing I had the pillar pulled and headliner dropped he told me to pick up windshield urathane and what to do. So, I fixed it myself. Tested it on a 330 mile drive in pouring rain and didn't leak so I'm good now. Wish I would have know that to begin with, I could have fixed it right away.
