When everyone was using the original coolant one had to check the SCA levels & recharge the system. Someone came up with the idea of having the sca's in a filter so the correct potency could be maintained. That filter would be know as a 'charged' filter. The same filter with no sca's in it was 'uncharged'. In either case it was up to you to determine & maintain the correct sca level. That all changed when ELC or Extended Life Coolant arrived. No sca check needed. For me that was part of the reason I switched. Hope this helps.

Nope, I am not saying that it does. All I am saying is that if you are looking for sand particulates or things like that the metals shavings will distort things.

That being said I just changed my coolant filter after 10k miles on my truck and it sure was nasty how much sand and crap came out.

Non-charged mean that it does not have the additive pellets in it.

When you first install the filter, you'll get "sand"... remnants from the casting. What I'm seeing in the OP's picture appears to be "fall out" when two incompatible coolants are mixed.

Had this happen to me some years back, couldn't even see the pleats of the filter. Straight up snot looking stuff. I switched from green to ELC, and didn't do a good enough job flushing the system (read almost impossible to get all the old out)

You will also get pieces of sand and casting stuff as time goes by because it breaks off from the heat cycles as I understand it.

Mike, I'll bet your stomach was a little squeamish when you was that... Mine was. I didn't take any pics, it was a WHILE ago. But I do still have a pick of the fall out.

So after that filter, no more fall out. I changed them @ 3 months for 6 months until I was satisfied.

That is nasty, thanks for posting brother, I'm sure people here would want to see what it looks like..And your right, not only was my stomach turning, I was upset that I didn't know about this filtering setup when I bought my truck new, prolly would have protected my waterpump seals from the start. I got a 161,000 on my stock W-P so only time will tell after about 60,000 with the filter setup so we'll see.
