Coolant Filter Change

i know this has been shown before but seeing as how i changed a water pump 2 years ago and then again last week i figured i would post up my findings. 2 years ago i changed the w/p and added my coolant filter. 3 months after adding the filter i changed the filter out to a new one per the interval instructions. i figured since i had new coolant it wouldnt be all that dirty. well after last weeks w/p change i changed the coolant filter again and then cut open my old filter and this is what it looked like:

this is the sediment that came out of the filter by just turning it upside down. the picture doesnt do it justice its a lot dirtier in person...

and here is the old filter internals:

pretty nasty huh?

Awesome pics Bill and thanks for sharing. Although its all good some might think (hypothetically speaking) We're all on a mission for people to go out and make their own coolant filtration system or just buy one, either way, the filters work and its been proven, over and over again.. Thanks for documenting, might save a water pump or two. Reps when I can Bill, just tried

I just installed the coolant filter kit today. I'm curious what I find in my first filter.

I actually went about 8 months maybe, give or take IIRC on the first filter swap even though Bob at (DS) said 3 months, your call really Franko.. I went by the flow restriction theory, when I seen the coolant was getting slower than normal flow into the degass bottle I changed mine.

That's pretty much the same thoughts I had with mine Mike, I just kept looking at the flow back into the bottle. I changed my 1st filter at about 6mos iirc & I believe I run that 2nd filter for right at a year then put a new filt when I switched to the ELC coolant. I thnk I'll just put a new filt on every year unless I hear something different.

Good info Mike, I'll keep an eye on it. I also installed the ball valves to shut it off, just in case I'm filterless.

How did you cut that filter open? If you used a saw it can make things look worse than they actually are.

Hey Frank if you did happen to run it until the filter got completely blocked it's not going to have any effect except not filtering. Another thing I heard to do is feel the filter after the truck is warmed up & if the filter is not as warm as the rad you know no coolant is going thru it, you prob already knew that.

Actually I did not know that, but it makes perfect sense. So thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll keep it in mind.

The Napa 4070 filter is a non-charged replacement filter for that Baldwin FYI
