New Turbo Time !!!!!

Hey yall im actully writing this for a buddy of mine. He has a early 99 7.3 and his turbo took a crap over the weekend. So hes in the market and will be ordering one tomm. My questions for yall are below....

1. His is a early 99. Its got a small turbo in it. Nothing like the... ic boots etc are as big as mine in my 2000. So i was telling him a 38r but idk if it will fit. Will it fit?

2. He has a superchip intake and exhaust and thats it. Is the 38r the right thing for him? if not what should he be looking at getting?

3. What ever he ends up getting is there anything special he will have to get because its a early 99.

Thanks FTE always a big help

e99 van turbo ftw
i had one on my e99 and pushed 332hp/666 tq on the dyno with dp tunes

38r will take alot more work but its possible and probably not the best bet with a superchips

has one says call for price shouldnt cost anymore than $300
i would rebuild it with this Riffraff Diesel: Garrett GTP38 Journal Bearing Rebuild Kit

and he will need this adapter to make it work on a truck
Riffraff Diesel: 1.15 A/R Turbo Outlet Adapter

yeah if he was to go with a 38r he would need to make it a 99.5 set up :
Riffraff Diesel: Early/Late Conversion Kit

quoted from clay's site
With this kit you are able to take your Early 99 7.3L and change it over to a Late 99-03 configuration. Our kit includes everything you will need to make the change.

- Reman Pedestal (Brand new EBPV)
- Intake Spyder
- OEM Intake Plenums
- Motorcraft RTV
- IH Bellowed Up-pipe
- Marmon Clamp
- Turbo/ Pedestal O-ring

Go with the Beans D66. It's a direct bolt-in for the early 99 and supports over 400 rwhp. Unless you just WANT to upgrade to the later intake setup.....

I havent really studied on this too much but appericate all the input. So the "van Turbo" out of a ford van is a good way to go for the early 99? Can you buy them new or do you need to find one wrecked and repair it?
From what i hear i dont think he will be doing the 38r. Too much work for him and prolly too much money involved. Id like to hear more bout the van turbo and or other options that can just bolt on.

van turbo would have to be from a van with a 12/06/98 or earlier build date (4 bolts on the compressor housing)

Why don't you call Clay if Riffraff? He'll take what you tell him as far as plans for the truck and tell you what would be the best thing you can do NOW in regards to what you wanna do with the truck later.

Why don't you rebuild the turbo you have? $100.00 for the kit.
