Question on early 99 and 01 7.3 turbo

I need some pro advice please on a turbo? I have a early build 1999 ford E-350 super duty van 7.3 diesel. A friend has a wrecked 2001 ford E-350 cube van 7.3 diesel. I was comparing my turbo setup to his today. his being newer looks like it has higher pedistal and up pipes. His turbo has a exhaust side has 1.15(mine does too) but his compressor housing (ar 1.0) is way bigger. The compressor inlet is the same (3") his outlet is 3" . Mine is 3" inlet and 2"outlet A/R 1.10. His y (spider) pipe is huge (3" inlet and outlet, mine is 2" in and out) and on his intake on his motor is 3" (mine 2"). Why would this be such an increase from year to year ( does the turbo push in more air)? He said I could buy all the stuff to upgrade mine, can this be done (the injector size is different from early 99 and late) and is it worth it? One more quick question I thought the bigger A/R # on the exhaust and compressor side ment bigger, but the compressor side on mine is 1.10 (2" outlet) and his is 1.0 (3" outlet) . so is way bigger. Thank you for your help. Can not believe how much time I spend reading on this site, has piles of info....

yes, you can convert them. you would need the up pipes, the intake manifold, the spider pipes, and of course the turbo. Ford went with a bigger turbo from late 99+. A member on here I remember doing this is RonsPowerstroke

Although your turbo has a bigger compressor side, it is smaller because the exhaust side is smaller. THis increases the drive pressure.

Hello yes I did find ronspowerstroke info last night I printed the pictures out, wanted to pm him to ask but I am a new member and am not allowed yet. One question Nic still confused on numbers my turbo exhaust is 1.15 AR and compressor side is a 1.1 with 3''inlet and 2" outlet(on the compressor). My buddies is a 1.15 exhaust and compressor is a 1.0 with 3" inlet and 3" outlet. So mine is a bigger # but smaller outlet ,where his is smaller # with bigger outlet (his whole housing is way bigger, is the wheel same size and does his push more air?) Sorry to keep asking just trying to get this straight in my head. Thanks

Yes, his wheel is bigger. THe early 99 had a wheel identical to the Wicked Wheel, which many 99+ guys convert to. THe early 99 wheel is slightly different, with more fins i believe ,10 instead of 9, I could be mistaken on that though. That wheel moves slightly less air, which reduces surge in the late 99+ turbos, which is why many convert to the early 99 wheel.

I will PM Ron and get him into this thread to help ya out.

So when they upgraded to all the bigger stuff on the vans was that to increase air flow, just trying to figure out if this switch is worth doing? When I look at the set up the newer one looks like it would flow way more air because everything is so much bigger? Maybe cool the EGT's down? Bryce

sorry, poor wording on my part, cant always relay information as it makes sense to me. re-reading that made no sense to me either

And Bryce, i do not know the specific reason for the switch. IIRC, Ron saw a minimal reduction in EGTs but you will have to ask him for yourself. I sent him a PM so hopefuly he will chime in shortly

Me, as far as i know (i dont see the problem with it, unless the exhaust housing is at a different angle that sets the turbo lower, but you could just swap over the compressor housings, and keep the same turbine setup. Of course you'd have to change the stamped steel intake plenums on the heads, and change the compressor manifold. More air will always get you lower EGT's, and if you can do it at less boost, it will be cooler too. If you have any questions in particular, feel free to PM me.

Kris, I like your thinking. At that point, I think I would just go for the full swap though, like I may do sometime soon.

Thanks Kris When I can pm you I will (new member). One more quick question if you know, the pre 99 has different injector part # than the 99.5 to 03 (according to ford), so will this pose a problem (smaller or bigger)? Thanks

The early 99 injectors are smaller and flow about 5cc's less (very minimal) than the late 99+ injectors IIRC. This will not pose a problem with swapping your turbo.
