Is there just one Royal Purple Transmission fluid or several ? Which is the correct one for our tranny ?
Is the tranny filter a dealer item only or should Car Quest or NAPA have one.. I'm going to do a fluid change and want to drop the pan and change the filter as well.
Thanks
Just one "flavor" of RP ATF. I'm running it in my 99 F250 and in all honesty, I'm going back to the "NAPA" Valvoline ATF. Why?
1. 40% of the cost of RP ATF
2. Tranny seemed to like it better
3. Much easier to find
I like the reported benefits of full-syn ATF, but for my particular circumstances, I'll be gonig back to the "cheap" stuff... if you call $100 in ATF cheap!
I just changed my trans oil.. and using Valvoline Dex/Mecron from O'Reilleys.. $4.19 per qt.. been using it from day one.. works great..O'Reilleys has the filter too.. around $30..
When I did a trany flush I used the Valvoline Syn Power Mercon which is synthetic. At the time (about 2 1/2 years ago) it was $3.99 a quart because Napa gave me a discount for buying more then 24 quarts. Bought enough to do the X-fer case and PS at the same time.
I'd like to change over to Synthetic ATF and was wondering if it can just be drained or if it should be taken into a shop and flushed before changing to Syn with a new filter ?
I read a post on FTE about changing the power steering over to Synthetic and figure I could do it myself but I'm not sure about the tranny . On the reverse side of the Syn ATF bottles I'm going to buy , it says it can be used with the existing ATF ?
Also , when you changed your X-fer case , you put in ATF ?? Maybe I just misunderstood your post .
