Hey Bill, where are these new members that we keep welcoming??? I don't even see one post from many of them. Why sign up member if they aren't ever going to post on here even once????
I brought this up with Jeff in Nevada & I think Nevada requires a person to at least post on the Chapter board a few times before joining. Not completely sure but I'm sure Jeff knows. Just a Thought. If your not going to participate on the board once in awhile why JOIN.
This has been a thorne in my saddle for sometime now, since living in Nevada. For awhile we had more new member that never posted a post than active members.
Anyway not meant to **** anyone off just my thoughts.
Bill if this post is in need of being removed I understand. Lets talk through PM.
Hey Craig, this has been a concern of mine as well... it is a hard decession to accept a new member to the chapter that has no posts. all i can say is that when i do activate there membership i just hope they will participate.
I posted the question in the chapter leader forum as to how best handle this situation.
my findings in a day or two.
Good Morning Jim, sounds like a great day. I met Garbz a few years ago in Prescott. He seems like a great guy to spend a Saturday with. He has a lot of valuable knowledge. Along with years of experience. When I met him he was working on his 60s High Boy 4x4.
Craig
Craig,
Here is the crew as of today. i still have a bit of work. LOL
I have been biting off a piece at a time with the crew restoration.
Heck, you and Eric get more done in a day than I seem to in a month. At the rate i'm going you will have the Hiboy done before my slick is on the road.
Its been some months since i first posted, and mentioned the issues i was having....long story short I am in the process of purchasing a 79 f250 camper special. I look forward to getting back on board with this forum, and learning as much as I can. The pickup is in great shape. No dents, original paint,ac, etc. It is the Ranger package.
The owner said the only issues he thinks it has, is the carb. needs an overhaul. Is that the same as a rebuild? Sorry I am a newb in regards to engine talk He said his mechanic said its giving off too much gas, and its causing a small backfire type sputter out the exhaust when you shut if off. Does that sound like something that would be caused by a faulty carburetor?
The engine is a 460. I was just thinking of just buying a new carb, but there is soooooooo many different ones. I read that a 650 carb is the one to get, and a 750 might be too strong for the engine...????
The only other thing, is the idle is pretty high, but only in park. Could this be also because of the carb?
I like the truck, and I understand a 31 year old pickup is going to have its share of problems, but I just don't want to buy something that is going to require tons of work.
I would really appreciate any and all opinions. I thank you again.

Good Morning Arizona.
Thanks Bill. Glad i'm not the only one thinking about this. Again I think Jeff is not signing up members until they start posting in Nevada. I know he said that was what he felt. If you notice pretty much since that time he has not signed up very many & those that he does post.

Rebuild, overhaul--same-same. Not surprising after who knows how long since the last one, but if you've never done one yourself before, and assuming it still has the original carb, a Motorcraft 4350 isn't the place to learn by yourself, nor is it one the average grease monkey can do well, IMO.

Oh man, the only way to go is a Holley 4781 850 double-pumper. Plus a new cam, manifold, and headers. Screamin' street racer. Be the first one to the next stoplight or gas station.
OK, maybe with the price of gas around $4.00/GL, and the low-end characteristics of the 460, it's not the only way to go.
All kidding aside, it really depends on what emission controls the engine has, and whether you're intending to keep them all in place, or whether you're going for normally-aspirated and some timing adjustments away from what smogged engines used.
A Holley 650 is about the right size for a 460, but whether it's the right choice depends on how the engine is set up. Having the Motorcraft 4350 rebuilt might be a better choice in the long run. Just my two cents. It's been a long time since I've worked on a '70s smog-controlled gasser, and I actually hope I never work on one again.

How high is high? i.e., what speed is it? Idle speed will normally be a bit higher in park because there's no load on the engine. So what you're seeing could be perfectly normal, or it could be caused by something else, not necessarily a carburetor adjustment. Hard to tell without standing in front of the truck while it's running.

Know someone who's well-versed in older trucks, and ideally, in '70s trucks? Best thing you could do would be to have him take a look at the truck before you buy. Even if it's in generally excellent condition, vehicles made from roughly '74 through '79 (or even a bit later) can be a PITA to troubleshoot and to find parts for, especially emisson control parts. Just sayin'. My opinion of mid/late-'70s vintage vehicles might be a little more negative than others, since I had to live through a number of them at the time.
I was wondering if anyone has a connection @ Desert Valley Parts and
if they are a pretty good place as there are some things I just won't by
on line and my list is at a point where I should start checking stuff off.
4onetons, thank you for your advice. As far as the idle, im not sure what speed the idle is at, i didnt see a tach in the truck when i looked at it.
It just sounds really reved, like your giving it gas, but goes to "normal" when you put it in drive. It even sounds good at a stop light, its just when you put it in park and it idles before you shut it off.

Garbz,
Isn't that what this deal is about the journey not the destination?
Looking Good I remember when you & your Lady friend ventured to Prescott in that. Can't wait to see it as you get it back together. It will be nice I'm sure, not to mention Rare.
