Yeah I wouldn't mind paying $400. I wonder why they would charge different amounts if its the same part
One is Genuine Ford that Dennis Carpenter bought from Ford, and according to the original Ford list price, Dennis Carpenter added about $100 to the price.
The other is a reproduction that Dennis Carpenter made themselves.
They do pretty good reproduction work, so it should look like the original, except for color.
Another option, take it to an upholstery shop and have it covered.
Mine has ultra leather glued to it, and it looks pretty good; and it was all cracked and nasty looking beforehand.

Are you sure it's a Carpenter repro? Or is he buying them from Just Dashes, like the one he sells for 1965/66's? Repro parts sellers are just like used car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists: They all lie like rugs.
Just Dashes (justdashes.com) is located in Van Nuys CA, repairs padded dashes and repro's them. Be prepared for sticker shock! They wanted 800 bucks to restore the padded dash on my '68 XL, five years ago.
btw: 3/29/2011 your post #8: E1TZ-1004282-A5A = I just ran this part number on PartsVoice.com .. DC shows 6 / Are these DC repro's, Just Dashes repro's, or genuine Ford?
Repro parts usually don't show up on PV. I also ran the numbers I typed in post 7 again on PV and the dealer locator, to see if anything had changed. Nope, still the same, zero.

Because it's not the same part, that's why. The charcoal one is NOS Ford, and the black one is a reproduction. I bought one of these (E1TZ-1004282-A5A) from Dennis Carpenter last year, and ended up sending it back. It wasn't too bad; it just wasn't the same quality as the OEM Ford dash pads are. The box it came in had "Dashes Direct" printed on it (www.dashesdirect.com), so it wasn't something Dennis Carpenter made. It was supposedly made from original Ford tooling, but this dash pad is more "bendy," if you will. It wasn't near as stiff as the original dash pads are, and I could just see it flexing and cracking really quick. The grain was a bit different as well, and all of the mounting tabs were missing, something I didn't really want to deal with for my restoration.
The dash pad covers are an entirely different animal. These are not complete dash pads; they are covers that fit over your existing dash. They are glued on, and the two problems I have with these are that the speaker shape is totally incorrect, and you will have to actually cut the cover off if you ever need to remove your dash pad, effectively ruining it.
I am rather picky and I am doing an actual restoration, so I wouldn't put one of these on my truck. But they are a cheap and a good option if you just want something to cover the cracked dash on a "beater" truck.

Well I was sure untill you made your valid point. DC at their site is stating it's a Repo, so... would only have to assume they made it.
As for lying like rugs, I take your point. See Lariat85's post directly over mine...
I ran every dash pad number in my book back in 2011, and those two numbers were the only ones that showed up.
I know the charcoal gray pad, E4TZ-1004282-B0P, is OEM Ford, as I was going to buy one from my dealer at cost because they were still avaliable. They still had over 100 of them at the warehouse, and then all of a sudden the warehouse was sold out, and a few months later they showed up at DC $100 over list price.
Also have NOS left and right inside and outside door handles. Blower motor and resistor. Ashtray and right passenger side battery tray for diesel. All NOS
