Just like everyone else who owns a 1985 Ford F-150, my dashboard is cracked. I set out to find a dash pad for my canyon red interior, but couldn't find any ANYWHERE. I did however find something that is called a coverlay. From what I understand, it just goes over your existing dash. The thing is, my speaker hole is dry rotted and chunks fall in anytime I wipe off my dash. Covering up the problem does not seem like a good idea to me. Does anyone have any experience with a coverlay?
If I happen to find another dash pad, but in a different color, can it be dyed red? How well does that procedure turn out?
If you're patient you'll find your dash pad on ebay.
I found a mint blue one for my 83.
You can use vinyl spray, available at most auto parts houses.
I've done it on the harder plastic like around the windows.
I used an "adhesion promoter" first. They sell that too.
Others have used it on more flexible vinyl like the dash pad, or worse yet, the vinyl seats. I think I'd do the dash cause youre not planning on flexing that. But I suspect the seats would cause it to crack.
lmc has overlays for 99.95 and the whole upper dash pad for 99.95, i would spend the money and get a brand new one, but you could probably find one cheaper on ebay or in a junkyard if you are lucky and want to look long enough
In my 1980 F350 my black dash was faded so I painted it. It turned out pretty good. Part of my speaker hole is rotted out like you said, only about the size of a quarter, but I can live with it for now. LMC Truck does have the coverlays and entire pads but they are $100. I doubt if you shopped around a junkyard you would find a decent one but it could be a last resort. I've looked up things on ebay and it's hit or miss.
Actually, a junkyard is hit or miss as well. My speaker hole was rotted out and I found a Canyon Red replacement that was in perfect condition. As I was walking out, I saw another truck with a Canyon Red interior that was in mint condition. Just be patient, you can find the parts if you wait.
I have a friend whose speaker hole was rotted out when he bought the truck and the rest of the dash cover was fine.He cut out the speaker covering and appoxied a spearer cover he had in his garage over hole. Definatly doesn't look stock.
fill the speaker hole if you don't use it and get it retrimmed, probably cost you half the price, mine did, if you use the speaker hole then replace with a standard speaker grill on top of a new dash with hole cut out...
