Ford also moved the solenoid protection diodes from the solenoid pack to inside the PCM. If you want to use a later model transmission in a pre-'95 truck you have to use the older solenoid pack or use a 95+ PCM.

I understand how to swap out the solenoid pack, but I heard the computer has improvements to the shifting in the later year.
I am upgrading my 1990 F250 7.5L 460 E4OD 4x4 to an E4OD that came out of a 1995. What all would be involved if I wanted to swap out my 1990 PCM for the 1995 PCM? is it a simple plug and play?
The most important upgrade was a bigger pump. You can do fine with a pre-95 E4OD as long as you swap to a 95-up pump. If you have it all apart, upgrade the center bearing support as well. Otherwise, the pre-95 stuff is fine in my experience.

The ignition system changed in 1994. Swapping in a 1995 PCM into a 1990 would also require a black colored CCD-style Ignition Control Module and some wiring changes to run it.
I have never heard there was an overall change in transmission programming on later model year trucks. It's a swap that will most likely only drain your wallet. If you want firmer shifts install a transmission valvebody from ThePunisher.
