2002 ranger over heating
no visable leaks, uses runs low on coolant about every 3-4 weeks
temp guage doesnt read correctly, shows normal temp when really hot
As mentioned replace stat, flush cooling system and install new antifreeze. Check the valve that controls flow of coolant into heater core for leaks. They have been known to fail. The rubber seals on side tanks of radiator can also seep.Another possibility is a head gasket leak where the coolant is being burned internally. Unfortunately your stat is a newer type sold as an assembly with a heater and sensor. It is a tad pricey.
how do you know its hot if the gauge is working? or does the gauge not move from cold?
the guage does move, it just doesnt move in the right area. when the motor gets hot the guage is about where normal temp should be. I know that it gets hot because the one time that the guage got up to that area, i shut it off and it would not turn back over until the guage went back down to the cold mark.
