Yep. There are several ways to notice when the GPR kicks back off again (stereo light brightness, DVM, dash lights brightness, headlight output, GPR LED mod, and my personal favorite is the audible "clunk" of the relay when it deactivates (I can hear this clearly since mounting it on a piece of large angle on the passenger side fender!).

I have the GPR LED mod... that's how I know it only comes on once in a while.

Next time you change of have the belt off, check the idler, tensioner and alt. bearings, feel/listen to them. If they are making noise i replace. Give the water pump a spin too and see if it wiggles up and down. This would apply to any vehicle.

I mostly wanted to bump this thread for any new ideas that may be out there.

I think you should post a picture of the '97 7.3 flatbed in your signature.
Then we'll talk.

This is my favorite forum thread ever. Routinely use this for my F-350 and now the Excursion I bought last year.

Things I would add based on my 13 years of combined ownership of a 7.3l:
1. Gear reduction starter - love it and they are cheap on eBay. Much better starting than the 7.3 OEM which always struggled with even newish batteries
2. Timbrens - know several that have broken rear leaf springs and I often haul heavy loads where I am on the bumpstops. I install these on every truck/SUV I own immediately
3. Purple CPS that I am currently running is the best yet. Keeping the other colors as spares in the glovebox
4. Heim clutch mod for manual transmission - this is one of the times I required a tow. Better to inspect the joint on the clutch pedal where I wore >50% of the way through before it failed completely
5. Cigarette lighter adapter USB that provides battery voltage - saved me once already when it early diagnosed a failing alternator. Gave me time to load up fully charged batteries to finish my trip
