Has anyone replaced an actuator on a tilt column. This is the cast piece that the switch rod attaches to. I've got a new one for my 89' van but I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get the new one in. the guide that is on the bottom doesn't clear the cage. I've moved the column up and down but I can't get it to go in. What's the secret??
The secret is that you have to remove the "cage".
I think that Steve83 probably has detailed instructions on how it's done and he will probably show up here soon
The Chilton's site had a pretty good diagram, but they've shut it down. I have an exploded diagram for truck columns here, but even when you zoom in on it, you may not get enough resolution to understand it. I can send you the big version if you e-mail me.
Basically, you pull the steering wheel off and just keep disassembling the column one piece at a time until you get the broken parts out, but be REALLY careful to observe the relationships of the gears as you pull them out, or you'll go nuts trying to reorient them later. Also, be sure to tilt the column fully up before extracting the tilt pins (by screwing in a hardened screw and prying it out like a cork) so the tilt spring doesn't shoot you in the face.
I know this is an old post, but I am having trouble replacing the same part. I dont know how to disassemble the tilt steering! Do I just remove the 2 pins that it pivots on while the steering wheel is in the up position? Those pins have a hole screwed in it, how do I remove them?
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-actuator.html Read the post in this link by jas88. One of the little screws you took out of either the turn signal plate or out of the column shroud (can`t remember which) should screw into the tilt pins. once screwed in just grab the screw with a pair of pliers or grips and pull the tilt pins straight out.
