ok, I lined the rotor up with the mark on my distributor (#1). and looked at the timing marks and it says 20deg towards BTC, I marked TDC with chalk and loosend my dizzy and started her up and put the timing light on it and the mark was way off, so I started turning, and she started running better, and then clunk..... I couldnt move her any more because the radiator hose is in the way!, I was wondering if I can take the dizzy out and move it back 1 tooth on the gear so I can get the timing light to line up with TDC? Can I do this and see if it works or will it screw somthing up? I know that the timing had been off since I bought the truck but I didnt think it was off that much. The PO had to take out the Dizzy because he did a rebuild on the engine... What can I do to solve my problem?
First off, read the book on how to set the timing on your engine. There is a specific proceedure, ususally with pictures, that calls for certain vacuum lines to be plugged etc. The book would have shown you exactly where the timing marks were also.
I read the book (and just bought the chilton CD) great tool to learn on! I recomend it to everyone! It has one picture of the harmonic balancer, I was looking on the drivers side for it, I thouhgt for some reason it was under the water pump? I found it under the alternator, and the only line that I gata plug is the vacuum advance, I know how to se the timing with a light, it just wont move any further, I think that it may be 1 tooth off on the distributor gear and was wondering if it were possible to move it one tooth back on the dizzy? Or if it will mess up somthing? Maybe mess up my ignition? I am not sure thats why im asking? as for now, it runs ok but seems like the timing is off just a tad bit because it missfires under certian RMP's
