2002 explorer wont shift into 4x4 low

I recently bought a 2002 explorer eddie bauer 4x4 with a 4.6. Its got about 107k on it and a bran spankin new transmission, got about 2k on it. The transfer case and differentials have recently had the fluid changed.

So to the problem. I have done some research on problems with the 4x4 on this model, it doesnt seem to be a problem with control module as it shifts into 4x4 high and i can hear it click with i push the 4x4 low button. I put the truck in neutral and press the brake then push the 4x4 low button, just like the manual days to. Like i said before, the truck does shift into 4x4 high and the indicator light comes on and everything, when trying to go into low the light on the button just blinks for a little bit then goes off. I havent been on this forum in a while and im glad to be back, any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Probably gonna have to pull codes out of the 4x4 module. I doubt Autozone can do it. Once you have codes, you should be able to track down the problem, just gotta know where to start.

As the transmission has recently had work, check the shift motor on the transfer case.... Philip

So do i have to pull the module and take it to a dealership or can they get the codes from the main computer plug-in?

All modules on your 2002 can be accessed through the OBD-2 diagnostic port. The key is that the scan tool needs to have the appropriate software to access the module.

went to ford yesterday. they want $42 to check the codes so I dont think Im going to be doing that unless I have too. Ive done some more research and it seems that a few people just unplugged the module and plugged it back in and it worked. When this rain stops I'm going to go try that and put some grease on the connectors.

You need to pull the 4x4 shift motor, clean the contact plate and replace the rubber bumper.

That is kinda what I was thinking, I'll do it next time I get a chance. Could be awhile though, I just got back to School.
