I really enjoy the mellow, deep sound of some trucks as they pass by. I have a 2002 7.3 and was wondering if I cut out the muffler and replace it with a piece of straight pipe will I create a simillar sound.
Any thoughts?
Do you have to cut the muffler out? Can't you just loosen the clamp and hangers and pull it out? I would just loosen the clamps and hangers and get a piece of tube that slides over the Y-pipe snugly and clamp it. I wonder if the junk yard has any 3.5" magnaflow or dynomax mufflers.
A Y-pipe is shaped like the leter "y". It connects the left and right exhaust manafolds into a single pipe. Usually al three ends of the Y are equal in diameter. I did not like that.
I mentioned dynomax and magnaflow because they both sound good and flow well. There are benchmarks on the internet of mufflers horsepower and torque compared to a straight pipe of the same diameter.
You don't have a Y pipe on your truck, just a down pipe off of the turbo.
That being said, you can cut out the muffler and install a piece of straight pipe in it's place. If you still have factory exhaust, it is either 3" or 3 1/2", can't remember which it is anymore. It will definitely make it louder, not sure how deep of a tone you will get though. I went straight from stock exhaust to a 5" straight pipe.
This link gives you an idea on the "sound" of our various mufflers.
Hope this gives you an idea.
A lot of time, people will run a Race Bullet or the like.
