Can't argue with the success of the 747, but I think the DC10 was a much nicer plane to fly on.

But the safest, systems-wise, was the L-1011 TriStar.
Tertiary-redundant systems for some of the critical stuff, and FOUR hydraulic systems.
WAAAAAAAY ahead of it's time, and some of the designs are incorporated in the latest stuff.
Think Palmdale, not Long Beach! (Sorry, Steve....)

I have absolutely no dog in that fight. I was just on the sidelines providing weather radar for all three brands, and watched it from a systems point-of-view.
The autopilot and flight director were head-and-shoulders above the others, and Delta eventually certified it to auto-land at Hartsfield. However, I seem to remember that it was a unique "Airspeed Hold" mode that caused one to crash in the Everglades.
It's just my two cents. However, it's also the opinion of a bunch of airline-transport-category pilots who have studied and flown more than one brand in their careers.
